The exhaustion gnawed at me like a persistent toothache. Days of campaigning had left me drained, the taste of victory in the upcoming elections offering little solace. As I approached the sprawling Khanna household, the usual warmth seemed muted. There was a different tension in the air, one that tugged at my already frayed nerves.
Amma, her eyes shining with an unsettling intensity, rushed towards me as soon as I entered. "Arjun, there you are! Come, I need you to meet someone."
"Meet someone?" I repeated, dropping my worn briefcase onto a nearby chair. The last thing I needed right now was a social gathering. "Who is it, Amma?"
Appa, a man weathered by years in politics, cleared his throat. "We received a proposal, Arjun. From the Malhotra family. They have a daughter, Siya."
The name hung in the air, a foreign melody in the already chaotic symphony of my life. "An arranged marriage?" I scoffed. "Now of all times?"
"Think of it as a political alliance, beta," he said gently, his voice carrying the weight of his experience. "The Malhotras hold significant influence in South India. It would bolster your position as Prime Minister."
I knew better than to argue with Appa. His political acumen was legendary, his word almost as powerful as a mandate. Yet, a part of me rebelled against the idea of someone choosing my wife, dictating the course of my personal life when my professional life was so demanding.
"Very well, Amma," I conceded, forcing a smile. "I'll meet her, but…"
Amma's smile, quicker than a politician's apology, cut me off. "No buts, Arjun. Trust me on this, beta. You might be surprised."*****
