You know, people always tell you to live life to the fullest. Do what you what, whenever you want. Don't let anything hold you back.
They've clearly never met my father. He's the king of a prospering kingdom, and he acts like it. Only problem is, he puts the kingdom over everyone else. Glory and tradition over himself. Over me, his only son. He's a great king, but a cold and distant father. Worse, he's following tradition and abdicating to throne to me as soon as I'm nineteen, in just a few months. He's increased my work and preparation tenfold.
Mother's different, but just as bad. She comes from a long line of famous royals, and she thinks herself a goddess. She puts her beauty appointments over the kingdom and its wars. Let them die! She says with a laugh. Mother has no regard for human life. She's had many of the palace staff executed and replaced, even some of her ladies-in-waiting.
My parents look over my shoulders, puppeteering my every move. Now that I've almost reached the marrying age, they've lined up a long list of young maidens: eligible ladies of high status and wealth. My father plans to host a ball on my nineteenth birthday for me to choose my wife. It's not a choice, really. Marry someone after just meeting them, or be forced to marry someone else of my parents' choosing. I've never even kissed a girl, for God's sake.
I head into town with a satchel of coins. It's the only way to escape. I dress up as a commoner and actually get to meet some of my kingdom's citizens. The normal folk are so calm and welcoming—it's a breath of fresh air. A break from being the perfect prince, the perfect son, the ideal husband, the one who everyone looks up to and expects things from.
I'm expected to stand on a pedestal that no one else can even see the top of.
It's March, but somehow it's freezing outside. Shadows of snow are still there, on the dull green, cold grass. I wrap a scarf around my neck and pull it tightly. Can't have people recognizing me! Oh wait. My parents hardly ever let me out of the freaking palace. No one knows my face. I head to town, glasses fogging up from my unnecessary scarf. Too late now!
I am walking out of my favorite bookstore with an extremely full bag when someone practically body-slams me. We topple down the uneven stone steps, hitting the dirt road with a thump. He lets out a yelp of pain. My glasses twist awkwardly on my face and I gasp to catch my breath. Luckily, my thick scarf cushions my head.
A boy that seems around my age is swearing under his breath. His hand pins my chest to the floor. One of his legs is twisted in a strange way—It seems he landed on it. A leather bag sits on the floor, papers scattered everywhere.
I stop to admire his face, which is only inches away from mine. It's not often I see such beautiful people. His hair drapes over me, soft against my skin, a murky dark brown. Stars cover his face and neck. His dusty jacket spreads out like a cape, and his knee sits precariously between my legs. He blinks deep, sapphire eyes.
