A/N: Hello lovelies, I am back...sort of. Some of you may know that my health has been on the major decline, I was recently admitted into the hospital. I'm doing a little better now, but that means I'm also going to take it a bit easy now. I've got a lot going on and can't keep up the pace I was before. Thank you for being patient with me! I hope you enjoy the chapter.
Chapter Twenty-Six: A Deal has been Struck
Nayavu fumbled into the room full of apologies, but the frantic tone of his voice didn't hide the underlying excitement.
"Nayavu is sorry, promised Reid space. But Nayavu discover–" The hatchling froze, cutting himself off mid-sentence when he realized the overwhelming presence of a furious Kincaid.
The slow turn and gaping mouth was almost comical if it wasn't for the dire circumstances that could very well be the end of everything.
Kincaid stood there, eyes blazing in shock and fury. But as Reid watched and felt through the bond between them, the shock overwhelmed the anger.
Reid wanted to groan in frustration. Nayavu had never been so careless before. Always checking before entering, let alone revealing himself.
What was it that he discovered? It must have been something huge for him to act this way, throwing caution to the wind. Not that Reid would find out, not from the way Kincaid glared at the hatchling who looked like he just might wet himself from terror.
"U-uncle," Nayavu started, voice small.
But Kincaid held up a hand to stop him, before pinching the bridge of his nose between his middle and forefingers. The bright red of his morá that had flared in undisguised fury slowly began to dim as each silent second ticked by.
Reid didn't dare move or make a sound, lest he draw unwanted attention to himself. Maybe he could play it off, like this was the first time.
No, that wouldn't work. Nayavu used his name and greeted him with familiarity. There was no way Kincaid wouldn't have picked up on that. There was no hiding it. They just had to wait until Kincaid revealed where his head was at in order to proceed.
It was nerve wracking, waiting as each second ticked by, waiting as Kincaid calmed himself down from the brink of exploding. And yet, Reid was still grateful for it. If Kincaid was calming himself down, that meant he was willing to listen, be rational. At least, Reid hoped that was the case.
"Nayavu," Kincaid gritted through his teeth, then released another concentrated sigh before starting again. "Nayavu, you can't be here. It is dangerous. I've already told you of the risks."
"But Reid isn't dangerous! Reid is your pair!" Nayavu insisted.
Kincaid's eyes flashed.
"That is what makes him the most dangerous, keya." The last word was said with a softness Reid didn't think the beast was capable of. It was gentle, endearing, and yet still imploring. He'd assume it was a term of endearment, but not one they had ever been taught. Though he supposed, why would a human need to know that? It's not like it would ever be used with them.
"Reid smell like kin," Nayavu murmured, looking down at his feet now. "Not dangerous."
Kincaid sighed again, but it seemed some of the anger was draining out of him. When he fixed his gaze on Reid, it was hard, and showed just enough that Reid knew the anger wasn't all gone.
"It seems you've been keeping even more secrets."
Reid only tilted his chin up in defiance.
Kincaid closed his eyes as if searching for patience, then said. "You must not tell anyone of your visits here, keya. Your King will be furious."
