I stepped back into the bar, almost holding my breath, and my eyes immediately darted to Marcus' table. I stopped, and my heart dropped. The table was already empty. I hurried to scan the bar, but at first glance, I didn't see him.
"Frick..." I breathed out, but refused to give up yet.
He couldn't be gone already. He said fifteen minutes, maybe twenty. He had to still be there, somewhere, so I continued my way deeper. I checked every corner and booth I passed by until I reached the bar counter.
"Hey, everything all right?" Lana asked when she spotted me.
I hesitated, but only for a second, before I turned to her.
"I'm looking for Marcus," I told her, again almost holding my breath.
"Oh, uh..." she uttered, looking around as well. "He just came to grab a soda, but I didn't see where he went."
"But he's still here, right?" I asked, feeling relieved, especially when she nodded.
"He's probably at the back, that way," she said, and waved her hand to where I hadn't looked yet.
"Great! Thanks," I said, but then stopped. "Actually, can I get a new cola too?"
"Sure thing," she said with a smile.
Once I had my drink, I continued my search. The bar was getting quite crowded now, so my search got a little harder, and when the very back of the bar was getting closer, my fear that he'd left already grew.
But then, finally...
Little alpha... my omega told me, studying the air in curiosity.
All I could smell was all the perfume and cologne mixed together, but I headed to the corner by the windows where my omega was pointing me to. There were a lot of large, private booths here at the back, so I couldn't spot him until I was almost next to his table. When I finally saw him, something about him stopped me.
He was alone, and his cola was still untouched. He stared out the window without moving, his expression blank. Everything about him was silent. Even his eyes were silent.
And I had this weird feeling... Like I was in the presence of something very old.
I must've stood there only for a few seconds, but that little moment seemed much, much longer than that. Then, he suddenly perked up, probably alerted by his alpha, and he looked straight up at me. He was clearly surprised to see me standing there.
"Hi," I said, and smiled. "Do you still want to have that drink with me?"
He still only stared at me without even blinking.
"I... brought my own," I said tentatively, shaking my glass a little.
"Oh! Yes! Of course! Sorry... Sorry..." he hurried to say as he rushed up on his feet to gesture for me to sit down opposite of him with a little bow.
I suffocated a chuckle while I sat down on the cozy couch behind the table. Marcus was wearing mafia clothes, but he did not yet seem to possess the calm attitude their kind usually had. Maybe he was new?
"I... I thought you were here with your friends?" he said as he sat back down.
"Don't worry, they encouraged me to come say hi," I told him. "They're my co-workers. I'll get to hang out with them at work."
"Oh, right, right... And the, uh... The tall...?" he stammered, snapped his mouth shut, then straightened his posture and smiled. "Never mind. So, Joni, how is your evening?"
"It's getting interesting," I admitted truthfully, as I studied his young features. "Never thought I'd be speaking to the guy who... dirtied... my shoes, but here we are."
