Rose dug her toes deeper into the sand. Maybe, just maybe the dragons would miss her if she was hiding under the sand. She knew there wasn't a good chance of this actually working, but what else was she supposed to do? Fight a dragon? Run away with a broken leg? Fight a dragon AND run away with a broken leg? It just wasn't happening and she had accepted that.
The cool desert night seemed eerily quiet. Aside from the dragon noises coming from the castle and the faint sound of Rose digging herself into the sand, the dunes were still. Good Rose thought. Most of the dragons had gone off to chase Stone and Heath and had left her unnoticed. She didn't blame her brothers for running off and leaving her. They had probably lost track of her in the confusion of the fight and thought she had already made her escape. She hoped. No She shook her head. They wouldn't leave me here if they had a choice. Would they?
She did not have much time to ponder, for in the distance she heard wings. Dragon wings and they were getting closer. No No No She thought, frantically trying to bury herself. She deeply regretted taking the time to hide the remaining bags of treasure in the dead desert queen's mouth. What had she been thinking? That they would be able to come back later to retrieve their loot? She almost scoffed at herself. This is what Stone always meant when he said I was bad at prioritizing. She realized glumly.
The wing beats were getting louder and Rose froze, hoping that she was covered enough to hide her body. A loud thump as a dragon landed heavily on the other side of the dune, quickly followed by many more. Rose realized that they must be crowded around the queen's body. Loud roars and growls echoed across the desert. She shivered. Those dragons did NOT seem happy.
As the dragons began to stomp around on the dune, the sands shifted and Rose realized her forearm had been uncovered. She quickly tried to bury it and hoped no dragons saw. She didn't think they did, as they seemed too busy growling at each other. Although, she could feel some walking closer than she would've liked. A worrying thought crossed her mind. What if one steps on me? She hadn't thought about that, but she supposed it was better than being eaten alive.
Then, the sand shifted and Rose could feel something poking her. Her body stiffened as something uncomfortably large and sharp continued the poke at her arm. Oh no, oh no, oh no her heart was pounding in her chest. She hadn't heard this dragon sneak up on her, had it seen her arm when it was unburied? Maybe she could play dead and the dragon would think there was just a dead human sitting under the sand. Yes, that's it! The dragon will think I'm dead and get bored. She thought. After all, dragons don't like dead prey, right? Yeah! It'll get bored and go off to play with its little dragon friends.
The dragon did not get bored. Rose suddenly felt large sharp claws wrap around her arm and yank her upwards out of the sand. She let out a yelp of surprise and nearly dropped her sword as she was dangled in the air, barely two arms lengths from the face of a massive desert dragon. It blinked at her, as if startled that the human arm was, in fact, attached to a human. Rose let out a yell and swung her sword at the dragon. It was not a very good swing, and missed the target altogether. Impressive She snarked to herself. You somehow failed to hit the giant dragon within arms reach. Surprisingly, the dragon was still taken aback by this aggression and dropped her onto the sand.
Rose landed painfully on her injured leg and screamed in agony before she could stop herself. To her horror, the scream alerted the group of dragons gathered around their queen's corpse. She saw several of them turn and look directly at her and the dragon who found her. Many began to make their way over to where the first dragon had her cornered, growling and hissing at each other. She tried to scramble to her feet, wincing at the pain, and brandished her sword at the crowd of dragons.
