I had to pick up my pace a bit, they walked fast. Part of me wanted to check out some of the rooms we passed, one looked like an actual theater but Emma was talking about me. "I know, I'm sorry, mom said I had to bring him, I forgot I babysat him this weekend. You have a little brother right? can they play somewhere while we look at the horses?"
Crystal seemed to shrug, "Manny went to live with his dad, little shrimp couldn't handle it here or something." Her voice was so soft and smooth, I was already falling in love.
"We can just leave him in the kitchen or something?" asked Emma, I remember Emma looking back. She seemed disappointed, sad. Older me now knows Emma had a crush on this girl. I was the third wheel.
The look I got from Crystal looking over her shoulder was something completely different. The look of a hunter spotting her prey across a large green field. The little smirk, the quick up and down of her eyes as she sized me up. It was only a split second and at the time I was still hypnotized by the purple, pink, and blue yoga pants but I know that look now. "No he can stay," she said. We'll hang out in the basement for a bit, it's too hot for the horses right now."
"Can I ride one of the horses?" I asked. Emma shot me the look of 'shut up' and Crystal ignored me. Instead, she brushed her finger's softly through Emma's hair turning her face back and whispered something in her ear.
The next twenty minutes were interesting... It was a big basement, pool tables, couches, the second biggest tv I had ever seen at the time. One of those big box square things, it even had one of the new Nintendo 64 hooked up. I wanted to play so bad but the girls decided to use that couch in particular to hang out on, and they were being icky. Touching, playing with each other's hair, so much whispering.
They didn't even seem to know I existed anymore. At one point I even timidly asked if I could go upstairs but no answer from either of them. So I went looking at all the board games, they had everything, most I didn't know but I spotted twister. A few months ago I learned about the game at Penny Guliskies 7th birthday party. A great game, Penny put her feet right on my left hand, Laura even fell on me for half a second, it felt so good.
I brought the box over to Emma and Crystal and asked "Can we play this later before the horses."
I don't think I've seen a girl as mad and frustrated as Emma was with me at that exact moment. The look of utter pissedoffness I got before a "No."
Crystal brushed her face with her hand again and said, "It's cool, Twister can be kinda fun."
Emma was shaking she was so mad as she looked back at me then spoke to Crystal. "No, you don't get it." She then leaned in and whispered something to Crystal.
Crystal's eyes widened a bit then she gave me another one of those smirks as she looked me up and down, slower this time. She whispered back into Emma's ear for a little bit but I heard her say "You ever do it?"
Emma's pissed off look disappeared, a look of confusion as she looked at me and said, "he's too small." Then she leaned back to whisper in Crystal's ear. I could tell Emma was getting upset again, her voice was getting just loud enough for me to pick out a few words, something about "mom", then "stand on", "hurt", "heavy." Then Crystal turned and gave Emma a quick kiss on the lips, the anger was back to confusion. I don't even think she noticed Crystal stood up and took the box out of my hands.
"So you want to play with the big girls?" Crystal said. She was standing so close to me, I had to take a step back so I could look up into her eyes, her beautiful dark eyes. She didn't lower her head to look down at me, I just remember those eyes focused down as I felt the box placed back in my hand. "Set it up and maybe we'll play." She went back to Emma and sat on her lap.
