(I hope you enjoy the first chapter of this story. Also, the song is 'Don't Run Away' by David Archuleta. I'm so happy you can use any youtube video on the computer version of Wattpad. The song is how Edward feels toward Bella when he sees her. He notices something isn't right with her, like she's suffering behind the smile.)

Bella's POV:

I woke up, blue-jays tweeting happily all above me. I rolled over, hoping for a few hours - or, at least, a few minutes - more sleep. However, after a few seconds, the rumbling of pickup trucks above me clarified that that obviously wasn't going to happen.

I lived under a highway bridge in a gully in eastern Maine. It was beautiful here, you had to admit, But sometimes it got quite lonely. It got extremely cold here in the winter, and I was thankful that during the winter my older sister was more than happy to grant me somewhere to stay. She offered to have me live there permanently many times, but I had politely refused each time. I knew eventually I would outlast my stay, whether she would be willing to admit it or not.

You see, I might actually take up her offer if it wasn't for the fact that she loves her privacy with her boyfriend Jasper. Her name was Alice, and she was only a few years older than me. She was 19 to be exact; I was 16. Her boyfriend is 20, and he moved in with her last year, right after she got a place. I was pretty good friends with Jasper, and he even offered to have me stay a few times, as well.  I turned down his offers, too.

Jasper was related to the local 'millionaires' - they weren't exactly as rich as people made them out to be, but they were definitely one of the better off families around this place. I've heard Jasper talk about his family a few times while I was visiting for the winter. He had said he had two brothers and a sister. They lived in Rockport, about 10 minutes south of where I was. I didn't quite know where I was, though, was the problem.

When Alice and my parents kicked me out, I just sort of wandered aimlessly for a few miles, until I found this huge meadow I call home. I just collected some supplies I found littered on the side of the road and sat under the highway bridge. It gave me pretty good protection from the rain we often had. I collected flowers from the meadow during spring, and they gave me comfort looking at them as the weather heated up. Eventually, though, they would die from water deprivation, and so would the wildflowers growing all throughout the valley, and so would the comforting feeling.

That would be around the time the weather got cold, and I got the little I had and hiked six blocks to Alice's house.

Right now it was mid spring, and birds were everywhere. They swooped around me a lot, obviously seeing worms that appeared from the late-night spring showers.

I sat up eventually, giving up on sleeping in. I checked my battered watch I've had since I got kicked out two years ago, and realized I was going to be late for work.

I worked at a small - but decent - cafe that was about a five minute drive - or in my case, a fifteen minute walk - south of my meadow. It was called the Caffeine Cafe, and we got quite a bit of business despite the size of it.

I gathered up my torn, black leather jacket that reached my mid waist, and pulled on my white - now off-white, muddy - sneakers. I began to trudge up the hill to the highway, and pulled on my jacket. After fifteen minutes, I spotted the familiar sign that showed a coffee cup with the words 'Caffeine Cafe' sprawled below it. As soon as I saw the sign, I began to jog, eager to get into the warmth.

"Good morning, Swan!" My manager greeted me cheerfully. I waved back and forced a smile. I pulled my green apron off the hook labeled with my name, and tied it around me, trying to cover as much of the tears in the clothes underneath it as possible.
