Pick a side

All of UA high school's year one students are gathered nervously in the same auditorium used for orientation, if there were ever an event to rival the sports festival this is it the hero and villain training the winning team automatically passes all of their finals while the losing team still have to take paper exams and practicals, there are additional prizes for the villains' team if they somehow win, not that it's a likely scenario the last villain team to win was well... never the closest a villain team ever got was 13 years ago. Every first-year picks their team except for the captains who are chosen from the hero course at random.

The auditorium waits with bated breath as Principal Nezu pulls two names out of a hat. Especially the hero course students, while technically Preparation week is just that everything changes for the unlucky villain captain while the teams can't be openly hostile to each other there are always at least some harsh words traded before the real competition even starts.

"The captain of the hero team is Bakugo Katsuki from class 1-A, and the villain team captain is Teru Sana from class 1-A, captains please come up to your respective team lists all other students have ten minutes to decide which team you want to be on or if you wish to opt out of the competition."  Bakugo walks confidently up to the stage to the cheers of most of the students while Teru slips by mostly unnoticed standing by the blank sign-up sheet. Teru feels like she's going to puke all she wanted was to make it to graduation mostly unnoticed and prove her point, ask most of class 1-A who Teru is and the answer is simple the kid who got in by a hair with an intelligence quirk and plans on going underground after graduation.

For the most part that's right, she barely passed the entrance exam getting two points above the cut-off, and Teru very much planned to be an underground hero but then there was that last tiny matter of her quirk, they were wrong, so were most of the teachers as UA tends to lock certain files at a students request if the information is proven false or unreliable or if the student gives a viable reason, in this case, Teru Sana is quirkless, however only Nezu, her best friends and Recovery girl know it.

Being quirkless is miserable and after suffering all through elementary and half of middle school for it she developed a simple strategy be so smart that nobody will even think you could be quirkless, never explain that you have an eidetic memory or how your IQ is higher than average and naturally people assume you have an intelligence quirk. That was how she got into UA hard work, looking over every possible thing she could relate to previous years' entrance exams, and finding the way to get through it she's by no means physically incompetent but the exam was still far from a walk in the park.

"Alright time is up! Row A please come up and put your name on one of the team listings, remember to be civil about things once row A is done row B will come up then C, and so on until everyone is on  one of the teams." Unsurprisingly the business students almost all opted out of participating along with a good chunk of gen-ed. However as students start picking teams Teru's heart rate spikes, ten... twenty... twenty-five students on the opposing team and they still have a little over a hundred students who need to pick a team. She glances up her gaze locking onto Hitoshi Shinso, he's talking to Aizawa-sensei but approaches the stage never even glancing at the other teams' sign-up sheet.

"Underdogs for the win" Hitoshi grumbles flashing a brief reassuring smile at her before leaving the stage, it's now a 2v30 this seems like it will end well- Teru avoids looking at her class, she can feel her heart plummet as they come up and one by one her entire class pick the opposing team, almost, much to her surprise two of her classmates Hagakure and Tokoyami choose her team. Of course, most of 1-B goes with Katsuki and a good chunk of the support course however there are a couple of surprises. One support course student decides to join them along with Monoma Neito. Now that everyone is on a team Nezu gathers everyone's attention.

"As you all know you wont have normal class schedules for the next weeks it is the time to prepare before your two weeks of competition. You have access to school resources and each team can choose a teacher to be their coach for the next week additionally your rulebooks will be delivered tomorrow, as the hero team is quite large, gyms gamma and beta will be set aside for them while the villains team are allowed to meet wherever as long as they give the teachers advanced notice. Gym theta is also set aside solely for the villain team to train. Now try your best students and go beyond, plus ultra!" The hero's team quickly files out while the villain team walks over to Nezu, he looks up at them.
