I drive past a school zone and take a right, just like Logan instructed. I turn onto the road and nearly ram right into a car in the middle of the lane. I swerve left, barely missing it. I glance over my shoulder for just a second and say,
"You guys okay?"
They all nod and a few give a thumbs up. Ashlyn narrows her eyes as she looks through the windshield, "There are more cars this way. Are you going to be alright, Y/N?"
I drive past several more cars and say, "Y-Yeah, I'll be fine."
Up ahead, I see an overgrown root from a tree stick out onto the road. I grip on the steering wheel and shout,
"Hang on!"
I quickly turn the wheel to the right to avoid colliding right into it. I hear a few grunts and I grimace, "Sorry, there was a root in the road."
Logan speaks up from the trunk, "That's strange...this road is usually well-maintained..."
We go over another bump in the road, which I apologize for. Ashlyn turns in her seat to look back at Logan and asks, "Are you sure this is the right road?"
"I'm positive...but there were never roots in the way," He pauses for a moment and peers out the open window, "Ah! Yeah, there's the gas station we usually...pass?"
I look over through the passenger window and spot the gas station up ahead, completely covered in overgrown greenery. I quirk a brow up at its worn-down state,
"Logan, is that place even up and running anymore?"
"Y-Yeah...they just opened it last year, actually..."
Tyler's eyes squint with suspicion, "That's...not a good sign."
I bite my inner cheek anxiously, no longer wanting to be behind the wheel right now, "Um...should we try a new route...? I'm not liking this-"
"Y/N!" Ashlyn suddenly gasps out, "Speed up! Quick!"
My eyes widen at her outburst, "W-What?! What'd you see-!"
"Speed up!" She repeats.
Without further questioning, I press on the gas pedal. The sudden increase in speed earns me a load of questions and skepticism,
"Y/N, be careful! What's going on?" Tyler shouts, gripping my head rest from behind me.
"I don't know! Ask Ashlyn!"
Aiden turns his head over to the ginger, who's eyes were locked on the road ahead, "Ashlyn...? What's up...?"
She closes her fists, digging her nails into her palm, "Something...there was something in the trees."
I try to stay focused, but the further out we go, the bumpier the road gets. I feel the jeep rattle and shake with every dip and crevice we drive over.
"What happened to the road?" Taylor asks in a frantic tone.
'Y/N," Tyler calls out to me, "Turn back. Something isn't sitting right with-"
"-We can't." Ashlyn cuts him off before turning to me, "Don't stop, Y/N."
Tyler's voice rises as he grows more concerned, "The hell you mean 'we can't'?! It isn't safe out here! Y/N, don't listen-"
"We can't turn back, Tyler!" Ashlyn retorts, looking over her shoulder at him with scrunched eyebrows.
"Why not?!"
"Because...it's right behind us."
The ground beneath the car begins to shake violently. The hairs on the back of my neck shoot up when I hear heavy thuds from behind us. I glance over to the rear-view mirror and I hold my breath when I catch sight of a large phantom with numerous sets of razor-sharp teeth. Its eyes were wide and blacked out with no pupils. Pointed thorns stuck out of it from all sides, scraping and cutting at everything in its path. It's width was much larger than the road itself, making turning back right now undebatable.
