the weekend

Snoring. Elwia heard loud snoring. Who was snoring? She was going to kill them. Elwia opened her eyes and looked around, and oh dear, her innocent eyes. She saw a naked Adrian fucking Pucey sleeping in Astoria's bed.

"Ew, what the hell! Put some bloody clothes on, my eyes are burning." Elwia yelled and pulled her covers over her face.

"Oh, shit! Adrian, wake up." Astoria said and shook Adrian awake. Adrian woke up and looked startled at what was happening. He pulled the blanket over his body, embarrassed.

"Um, you let me stay over?" Adrian mumbled with a confused gaze and looked around the room, probably looking for his clothes.

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean anything." Astoria spoke while putting her shirt on, but something in her tone told Elwia she wasn't telling the truth.

"Okay, sure, whatever." Adrian rolled his eyes and finally found his clothes, and started putting them on, and left without saying anything.

Pansy's bed was empty, and the girl was nowhere to be seen in the room.

After a short while of trying to recall last night's events, Elwia gave up and pulled her blanket aside. It was surprisingly warm in the dorm, given that the Slytherin common room was literally underwater or in the dungeons, or something like that. She wasn't even sure.

Astoria sighed and looked at herself in the mirror; she looked to be deep in thought.

"So... What's this thing between you and Adrian?" Elwia asked carefully and looked at Astoria.

Astoria stayed silent for a few seconds before answering, "This summer, we were kind of dating, but then we got into a fight because a friend of mine saw him snogging another girl and then she obviously told me about it. He denied it, of course, and I didn't know who to believe. He said some bullshit about me having trust issues, and I called him a whore. Then we had shagged and didn't see each other for the rest of the summer. At the party last night, it was the first time we spoke in 3 weeks, and it was probably because of the alcohol, but I had this feeling that our thing wasn't really over. Then we started snogging, and that led to us shagging again... I missed him; that's why I let him stay over, but I don't want him to know that, because I'm scared that he doesn't feel the same and that I was wrong. I really like him, he's the only one I've been with." Astoria explained, distressed and almost on the verge of a breakdown.

Elwia nodded her head with an understanding look and gave Astoria some girl advice. They talked about Adrian and the stupidity of boys for almost an hour, until Elwia's stomach made a growl so loud that they knew it was time for breakfast.

The Slytherin table was almost completely empty of sixth- and seventh-year students. There were only giggling younger-grade students who didn't yet know the terror of a hangover.

Elwia noticed Harry, Ron, and Hermione at the Gryffindor table. She hadn't talked to them since the train ride, so she wanted to make sure that they were still on good terms even though she got into Slytherin.

"Astoria, I'm going to say hello to a few of my friends. I'll be back in a few minutes." Elwia informed. She walked up to the trio and waved hello and much to Elwia's disappointment, they seemed a bit hostile towards her.

"Hey, good to see you again. I didn't see you at the party." Elwia said with a shy smile and sat down next to Ron.

The trio shared a look with each other, and Harry nodded, almost as if he were giving permission, because after that, all of them started smiling a little more.

"Yeah, we were so tired so we just wanted to go to sleep." Hermione explained and took a sip of her black coffee.

"Okay... Why the hostile attitude at the start?" Elwia confronted and crossed her hands.

"Sorry. We have had lots of bad experiences with Slytherins, and when you got into Slytherin, we were kind of shocked. But you seem brilliant, so I guess not all Slytherins are the same." Ron explained while scratching the back of his head apologetically.

"Hmm, I understand. See you around, I guess." Elwia spoke slowly, got up, and started walking back to Astoria.

Elwia felt offended that they were almost ready to stop being friends with her just because she got sorted into Slytherin. They knew what her personality was like on the train ride, so why would her personality suddenly just change because of a house? The house rivalry was ridiculous.

Elwia and Astoria ate in silence, both in their own worlds, thinking about their concerns. That didn't last long, because the Slytherin boys happily marched up to the table, and they announced it rather loudly. Although, one couldn't really say that Malfoy was marching happily, well, he was just marching.

"Hello, ladies!" Blaise smiled as he spread butter on his toast, "Hungover, much?"

Elwia and Astoria nodded quietly, and they could hear Theo and Blaise chuckling. Elwia saw from the corner of her eye that Adrian was looking at Astoria with a somewhat sad look on his face, but Elwia's focus on Adrian went away rather quickly, as she saw Snape handing out their timetables. She looked at hers with curiosity and eyed Astoria, who was sitting next to her.

"Yay, we have all the same ones, except for History of Magic." Astoria exclaimed happily. "Draco is the only one of us who takes History of Magic. So I guess you'll have him as your partner there." She whispered and winked her left eye.

Draco had heard what Astoria said, since the poor girl didn't know how to whisper, even if her life depended on it.

"I can't wait, frenchie." Malfoy scoffed and rolled his eyes while taking a bite out of his green apple.

"Frenchie? That's so childish." Elwia scoffed and muttered, "Bleach blondie,"

Before Malfoy had the chance to say something back, Pansy finally arrived at the table with a shy smile. The group all showed each other their timetables, and it came to their attention that they shared every class. Well, except for History of Magic, which Elwia would be attending with Draco Malfoy only.

The whole weekend consisted of the group hanging out in the courtyard or the common room. Elwia thought that Blaise, Theo, and Adrian were quite funny, and so were Pansy and Astoria. Malfoy was the only one who didn't really joke around; his way of joking was sarcasm and casual insults towards his friends. Elwia noticed that no one took it to heart, probably because they all knew that was just the way Malfoy was and that he probably didn't mean the bad things he always said. Or maybe he did mean them, but why would Elwia or anyone else care what some bleach blondie has to say about them?

It was a Sunday night, and Elwia was laying in her bed. Astoria and Pansy were probably sleeping already since Elwia could hear a faint sound of snoring coming from one of the beds.

Elwia was reading The Bell Jar book with the help of the light coming from the tip of her wand. In the book, there was a sentence: 'What do you have in mind after you graduate?' Under the sentence, L.E. had written, "Me and J are going to be aurors."

Elwia smiled a little and wondered how L.E. and J. were doing now. She had come to the conclusion that L.E. and J. were probably in their late thirties now—about 36 years, maybe. The first page of the book had the sentence A Christmas Gift from R. 24.12.1976 in it written in L.E. 's handwriting. Elwia had come to the conclusion that if they wanted to be aurors after they graduate, that must've meant that L.E. and J. could be about 16 years old when the annotations were written. Elwia felt smart when she figured it out, but it didn't really help with her search for the identity of these people.

Elwia often thought about the meaning of things a little too much. Sometimes things weren't that deep; it was really that simple.
