The soft hums of crickets chirping surrounded me, I had pushed my window open to feel the warm summer breeze of the night. A gentle sigh left my lips, my eyes casted over to my alarm clock which blinked 12:42 causing me to get frustrated. I had work tomorrow morning in about six hours. I forced my eyes closed focusing really hard on falling asleep which after a while happened, slumber swallowed me whole.
My alarm blared loudly, I shot up in bed with a loud gasp. Drowsiness filled my body and I struggled to slip out of my bed, the warm covers begging me to stay put where I was and to drift off again. But I couldn't I needed to get ready for work so I pulled myself out, my curtains blew lightly in the wind and I harshly shut the window. My fingers stayed on the edge of the glass and I peered out to look down at the road, my townhouse was about three stories. Kids ran down the sidewalk with bikes, screaming and laughing with each other which made my lips twitch up into a small smile.
"To go back to that life, everything was simple." I murmured to no one but my alarm clock as I reached over to shut it off. I lazily dragged my body to my closet and shifted through the clothes stopping once I uncovered my work uniform. I worked at this cute little cafe in the city close by where I live, I loved my job well I would love it more if I didn't have to wake up at six in the morning which in my opinion is way too early.
I snatched my keys from the small ceramic bowl I crafted when I was in elementary school, it was wonky and horrible. I fucking hated it yet my mom loved it more than anything, bragging it was made it love instead of talent. I rolled my eyes and grabbed the cup of coffee my mother made me for the day.
"Okay mom, I'm out I'll be home before dinner." I called out receiving a simple 'okay' back, making my way to the front door as I slid into my black Crocs for work. I made sure to lock the front door behind me as my mom preferred it even though this neighborhood was as safe as safe can be but she always argues that it can change at any point and she'd rather be safe than sorry. Cars rolled up and down the road, I checked my pockets as I went through my mental list of everything I needed.
-Phone. ✓
Yup.
-Wallet. ✓
Always.
-Car keys. ✓
Duh, they are in my hands.
-Coffee. ✓
Never leave the house without.
-My multi use tool. ✓
Never know when you might need it.
I smiled and hummed to myself as I opened my car door, the grey paint was chipping slightly on the bottom of my door but it was old, a 2012 honda accord that I bought used from a close family friend. I leaned over and shoved my cup in the cup holder followed by my phone and wallet in the other cup holder. I tied my apron a bit tighter and sat down on my seat in my car and slipped my keys into the ignition and started it, bringing it to life as it rumbled under me. I plugged my phone into the Bluetooth and clicked the first playlist I saw on screen and rolled out of my driveway, my windows going down since the temperature outside was beautiful, air was not needed today. I started driving towards the train station close by my neighborhood, I reached over towards my glovebox and pulled on the handle causing it to click open. I grabbed my vape I hid in there and slammed it closed, glancing at the road before I took a hit. The smoke mixed with the flavor sucked down my throat and I exhaled, the cloud of white smoke blew out of the window and I started to slow down at the red light. I picked up my phone and checked my messages, my friend from work Stirling had sent me texts.
