But she lay there in terror, the silence broken only by a choked cry she couldn't fully release. In the chilling darkness of the room, she wished for death as she tried to breathe, tried to live. Because despite it all, she couldn't bear to disappear.

Her vision blurred with tears, and as she gasped for air, she realized that was the first time her breath could be seen.
