The sound of the knife clattering to the floor filled my ears as I gasped in surprise. He pulled me into his strong embrace, pushing my back up against the table behind me.

“Jasper,” I breathed out, finding it hard to speak or breathe. “What are you doing here?” I shouted, surprised and elated to see him. Warmth and happiness flooded through my body, causing little tingles to run down my spine. He kissed my cheek, the side of my head, and my forehead before pulling back to smile at me. I reached up and cupped his face in my hands as I stared at him happily.

“Class let out for a while. I’m ahead, holding the highest grade out of those taking the course,” he replied, smirking a little. “I decided to come visit the one I love.” He stopped talking then, and bent down, kissing me full on, leaving me light-headed and breathless. I hadn’t realized how much I truly missed him, until he was here, holding me in his arms after what felt like centuries.

“You scared me,” I laughed shakily, wondering how in the world I had thought Jasper was a rapist, or a thief of some sort. It was then that I noticed the sharp, stinging sensation in the heel of my foot. “Ow, damn,” I cursed, lifting my foot up. Shards of glass protruded from the flesh along the bottom of my foot, puncturing the soft, tanned skin. Crimson, warm blood was smeared across the skin as well, highlighting the areas of puncture.

Jasper frowned at the lacerations on my foot and immediately helped me into the nearest kitchen chair, easing me down into it. He lifted my foot and sat it on another chair.

“Hold still,” he instructed me, quickly grabbing a towel. He slid it under my ankle and disappeared into the hallway. Another moment passed and I heard his footsteps thunking up the stairs. I looked at the sticky mess on the floor. Red wine was mixed with blood, and the glass shimmered amongst the puddle of liquid.

He returned a moment later, carrying a pair of tweezers, a small, ceramic bowl, and a first-aid kit.

“Do you think we’ll need to go to the hospital?” I asked nervously, bending my knee. I inspected the bottom of my foot carefully, keeping my hands away from it. Jasper shook his head as he cautiously stepped over the mess and sat down on the other chair. “I wasn’t watching where I stepped.” I sighed, sitting back. Gently, he rotated my ankle partway, exposing the injured spots on my heel. He washed his hands at the sink, and dried them before returning to his seat. I closed my eyes and looked away.

“I won’t hurt you,” he said tenderly, resting his hand on my leg for a moment. Squinting my eyes open, I looked at him speculatively. I trusted him, but this would be painful no matter what.

“Just,” I huffed out, “go for it!” He looked at me frightenedly for a moment, before nodding and grabbing the tweezers. He stared at them with interest before lowering the points to my foot. The moment the cold metal made contact with my skin, I allowed my mind to wander.

I watched Jasper’s face as he worked. It was safe to say, that even though he was twenty-four now, he still looked the same. He didn’t look young, per se, but his aura was still very lively. His short, dark hair retained its length, and his gray eyes kept their shine. He grew a bit in height, defined his muscles properly with real exercise at the gym, and learned he had a love for running. Two years ago, he had finally stopped seeing his therapist, Ms. Morris. It was an amazing experience, to have watched him grow both physically and mentally.

No one was perfect, not even Jasper. He had come a long, long way and was the closest thing I had ever encountered, that could be categorized under ‘perfect’. Another thing that had grown over the six years I’ve known Jasper, was my love for him. Even if I didn’t have the opportunity of waking up next to him each morning, he was still my main priority.
