The MNIC safe house pulsed with a frantic energy. News of the attack spread quickly, raising the stakes to a fever pitch. Dr. Maryam bustled around, barking orders, her calm facade barely masking the worry etched on her face.
Soo Yeon, however, felt a strange sense of calm amidst the chaos. The conversation with Dr. Maryam had ignited a spark of purpose within her, a burning desire to use the Diamond for good. Yet, the immediate danger remained. The enemy was still at large, and Soo Yeon, the girl with the Diamond, remained a target.
That's when Lily and Robert Wong entered the safe house, their faces etched with concern. Lily, her eyes red-rimmed from tears, rushed to Soo Yeon's side, engulfing her in a hug.
"Soo Yeon, thank goodness you're safe," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
Robert, a kind-faced man with a gentle demeanor, knelt before them. "Soo Yeon," he began, his voice grave, "your parents... Hye Soo... they spoke to me before the accident. They expressed a wish..."
He hesitated, his gaze flickering to Dr. Maryam, who offered a curt nod of understanding.
"They wanted us to adopt you, Soo Yeon," Lily said, her voice breaking. "To be your family. Hye Soo... she wanted you to be safe, to have a normal life."
Soo Yeon's heart ached. The warmth of their concern, the echo of her parents' final wish, brought a fresh wave of grief. Yet, amidst the sorrow, a sliver of hope bloomed. Perhaps, a new family, a new identity, was the key to disappearing, to buying time to unlock the Diamond's secrets.
Dr. Maryam, ever practical, cleared her throat. "Soo Yeon," she said, her voice firm but laced with a hint of sadness, "going with Lily and Robert is the safest option for now. Robert, with his connections, can create a new identity for you, a fresh start."
A pang of guilt twisted in Soo Yeon's stomach. Leaving MNIC, leaving Dr. Maryam who had become a source of comfort, felt like a betrayal. But Dr. Maryam's next words eased her worries.
"However," Dr. Maryam continued, a glint of determination in her eyes, "it's not goodbye. Lily's a neighbor of Dr. Shamsiah, my old friend from medical school. I can discreetly keep an eye on you through her."
Relief washed over Soo Yeon. Dr. Shamsiah, the kind doctor who had treated her after the car crash, would be a watchful eye. The connection felt serendipitous, a bridge between her old life and the new one she was about to embark on.
With a heavy heart but a newfound resolve, Soo Yeon agreed. Bidding farewell to Dr. Maryam, she stepped out of the safe house, hand in hand with Lily and Robert. The familiar streets of Matang awaited, no longer just a place of childhood memories, but a potential sanctuary.
Soo Yeon, the girl with the Diamond, was about to shed her old skin. A new identity, a new life awaited, a chance to heal, to grow, and to unlock the secrets of the power within. The journey ahead was shrouded in uncertainty, but for the first time since her parents' death, Soo Yeon wasn't afraid. She was determined. She would honor their memory, protect the Diamond, and find a way to use its power to heal the world, one life at a time.
