School and Sadness

It's May 2nd, 2024 and I just found out that my crush, Melvin, likes me back. Remember this, it will be a big part of the story. So, I go to tell my best friend, Rylee, that he likes me back and I ask her "Should I ask him out?" She tells me, "Lily, you need to! He likes you back, so why not?" (She clearly is braver than me) 

I think not much of it during class time because I really should focus. When I got home from school, everything was normal and I had a pretty normal day overall. But when nighttime came, I could not stop thinking about him. I could barely close my eyes without thinking of what could be the future with him. But there is one problem...we used to be enemies and there is not a lot of good to think about from when we were enemies. Now, we barely talk but clearly we see each other in different ways that nobody else does. I finally just think to myself that it shouldn't matter. It's been 2 years for god's sake.

At about midnight or so, I thought to myself, "I will ask him out tomorrow. It shouldn't be that hard especially if he likes me." I shut my eyes and go to sleep, almost smiling. The next morning, when I am finally back at school, I wait at my locker to see if Melvin is at the water fountain, which he normally is in the mornings, and I find that he is there and he's talking to his best friend, Jax. I stare at him for a little bit, admiring how gorgeous he is. I mean, that brown hair falls perfectly every time he looks back and his eyes could stay in my mind for ages if I needed them to. They were so dark that you could almost call them black. 

But then, Landon, my childhood best friend, walks in. I wave at him and it distracts me from Melvin. After just talking and giggling a bit, Landon walks away and gets to his locker. So I decide to put my backpack away in my locker and gather the things that I need for class. And as soon as I look back, one of my teachers is staring at me blankly. My math teacher, Mrs. Turner, who is (if you would call her that) one of my friends. And no, I am not one of those annoying ass teacher pets. 

As I begin to walk into my classroom, she looks at me. Her eyes following me, she says "Good morning, Lily." I look at her briefly, and reply with about the same, "good morning, Mrs. Turner." and continue walking. With Melvin on my mind 24/7 today, I'm barely paying attention. Classes pass by quickly and there comes lunch. When we got to lunch, Rylee, Landon, and I decided to just sit and talk rather than eat. I'm totally nervous to ask Melvin out before we go back to our classes. So, I asked Rylee to ask him out for me. And she did it. She walks back towards me with a smile on her face and says, "he said yes!!!" 

I'm super happy and when we start to head to class, I decide to walk towards Melvin and talk to him. I tell him, "hey. i'm really happy we are finally dating!" (I tried to act natural) He looks at me and says, "me too. I'll see you later." with a slight smile on his face. As we came through the doors that lead to the hallway, where all of our teachers were standing, he looks me up and down and waves. I smile at him and do the same. When I walk past our teachers, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Carpenter, and Mr. J, I turn towards the water fountain to get a drink. (It was hot and I was nervous)

I look back slightly to walk forwards, only to notice that Mrs. Turner is looking at me again. I smile at her and walk away, getting to my next class. The first class goes by quickly and I'm feeling pretty great about myself. But a part of me is confused. I don't remember why, or what I was even confused about, but I was. And that distracted me from a lot. 

When I got to language arts with Mrs. Carpenter, I sat down in my seat, next to Jayden. He looks at me and says "I know why you're so happy." I looked at him blankly and ask, "What?" He looks back at me with a different look, a look that said " Don't act clueless." and I realize, "Holy shit! They know! Melvin must have told some people and it spread through the grade." I slightly smile at Jayden, and turn towards Mrs. Carpenter and we began the lesson. 

Everything else is normal, even math class, which is always chaotic. It felt weird to me. At the end of the day, my old friend and ex, Isabella, walks up to me and says, "I know something." I look at her, puzzled and walk away. The next 2 weeks or so went by in a breeze, it was super normal and Melvin and I were really happy with each other and ended up hanging out a lot more. It was great...Until I found out that another girl, CC aka Cassandra, had a crush on Melvin. It got so bad that one day she said, "He's so cute. I don't know how he could like you." in front of me. I got pissed quick. I look back at her and say, "Excuse me?" 

I don't remember whether or not Melvin was beside me when it happened sadly. Cassandra said, "he's mine! " I immediately have a comeback, "You wish, honey." and she looked at me with an angry face and I was proud of myself. I was surprised that bitch didn't have anything else to say. My friend, Dom'Nystee, was laughing at my statement and I smiled. She was enemies with Cassandra, so that made it even funnier. 

And in the same day something happened, well not really something she said. But something she did. During math class, Mrs. Turner was walking around, looking at our papers when we were working. And when she got to me, I noticed that she looked at my hand, which had a heart with a giant "M" in the middle. She looked back up at me, met my eyes, and walked to the next person. I was so embarrassed. My cheeks red, I looked back at Rylee, who sat behind me and mouthed something. My lips read "I think she knows." and I could tell she knew what I was talking about. When Mrs. Turner snaked her way around me and Nolan, the strawberry blonde boy that sat next to me, she got to Rylee. And Rylee gave her a look that made me giggle. Rylee's face read, "mind your own business." and it was hilarious! 

Next few weeks were fine yet again, and Mrs. Turner was acting SUPER WEIRD. She even pulled Melvin out of class a few times.  She pulled me out of class a few times too. Sometimes, it was her giving hints toward the fact that she was catching on to Melvin and I and sometimes, the talks in the hallway were just other things. Mrs. Turner and I were really close at the time. Ever since November, we were really close and we would talk about a lot of things from time to time but sometimes, I would think she thought we were something other than friends. But we never were so I acted clueless to avoid it. 

Anyways, time passed and both Melvin and Mrs. Turner (for some reason) were super weird. Melvin was depressed and I tried to help him. He is still depressed to this day, and I wish I could help that, I really wish I could. Mrs. Turner though, was weird around me in her own way that I don't talk about anymore. The last day of school came quickly and we went to a skating rink for the last day just to have fun. And it was really fun! Some of us snuck our phones in and took a lot of pictures. I even got some pictures with/of Melvin! It was a great day, it really was!! But towards the end of the day, when we were about to leave the skating rink, I sat down next to Mrs. Turner, who was alone and seemed bored out of her mind. And we had some normal conversation until I brought up Melvin on accident and she asked me a question I will probably never forget. She said, "So you and Melvin. Are you two a couple? I have been curious for a while." I was shocked but at the same time, I wasn't. I knew she caught on but I didn't know that a teacher like her could ask such straight forward questions. 

I responded with, "Mrs. Turner! I'm only __!" She said, "I know but some students like to break rules and stuff so I wasn't sure." "Oh, well, Melvin and I are just friends. Why do you ask?" She didn't respond to my question but she said, "Oh. Well, I'll remember that." and she laughed. I giggled because I was trying to follow along. She said," Good girl. Keep your head up." She grabbed my hand and walked away to help another student with something. I sat at the same spot I was before, next to her and I just stopped. I stopped everything for a few seconds and just sat there. Then when we had to leave the skating rink, I got up and walked to the back of the skating rink, where the buses were. I heard my full name out of nowhere, and I look behind me and Mrs. Turner is standing there with my jacket in her hands, and she says, "you forgot this." I smiled at her and said, "Oh. Thanks!" and walked away once she smiled back. 

Once I got on the bus, I sat next to Rylee and we talked and took selfies the whole ride back to school. We got back to school and said goodbye to everyone for the school year and headed out. All of the teachers in the school walked outside, where we were and waved goodbye to us. I started to cry because I saw some of the greatest teachers I've had there, including Mrs. Turner. (I'm crying as I type this haha) The last day of school was depressing for me.
