Zayn had visited the Baqinian Palace on previous occasions, as his father had instructed him to sneak into the palace twice before. This time the mission was easy, slide into the Sultan's study and grab the "important" documents. It was rumored that the Baqinian Kingdom were making plans of invasion into the Samerian Kingdom, and the documents Zayn is supposedly trying to steal contain the exact whereabouts of their planned attack.
Zayn's hands were raw and chafed from clinging tightly to the rope. He had finally reached the balcony leading into the Sultan's study. He brushed away the velvet curtains, revealing the shelves full of books and the cluttered desk, reminding him of his father's study. Zayn clutched onto his dagger, poised incase of any setbacks. Straining to see in the darkness, Zayn's only source of light was the faint moonlight filtering through the gap in the curtains.
He approached the paper-filled desk, browsing through each one. After almost skimming through half the papers, his eyes find a folded piece of paper laying at the corner of the desk. He quickly snatches for the paper, rushing to unfold it.
His eyes widened at the sight, this was it, the whereabouts. He muttered out an insult, shaming the Sultan's idiocy. Zayn tucked the paper into one of his pockets. Zayn made his way to the balcony, when suddenly he heard a sharp intake of breath, he paused and turned his head to the side. There was a girl standing right before him.
"Stop! What are you doing entering the Sultan's study?" Her hushed whisper surprised him. Zayn scoffed at the way the girl was clutching onto the dagger, she clearly didn't know what she was doing. He fully turns to face the girl and pulls off his mask, a grin planted on his face.
"Lady, do you even know how to use that dagger of yours?" Zayn cocks out with confidence.
The Princess stills in fear, staring at the tall man cladded in black, his voice, deep and rash, fear washes over her. The Princess clutches both of her hands on her brother's dagger.
"Don't make me call the Guards"
Zayn slightly raises his eyebrows "And why would you do that?" Taunting the girl.
The Princess furrowed her eyebrows, this guy was playing tricks on her! "Because you're stealing the Sultan's documents!" Zayn glances at her dainty hands clutching a crinkled paper.
"And what exactly are you doing with that paper?" Zayn demanded, trying to divert her attention. The Princess ' eyes went wide as she realized she had also been caught in the act, her heart pounding rapidly in her chest. Silence coated the room as the two eye each other waiting for the next move. They both jitter at the sound of sudden footsteps rushing toward them.
Guards pull open the door and dart toward them, swords poised. "Amira, what are you doing here?"
"He's over here!" The Princess exclaimed in frustration, turning her head and pointing towards Zayn. But when she whirled back around, Zayn had vanished.
"He was just here, where did he go?" she cried in bewilderment.
The guards halted a few paces behind the princess , their expressions etched with anger. "Amira, I believe it's time you were in bed," one of them said sternly.
In the dead of night, as the young man in black fled across the Baqinian kingdom and the humiliated Princess returned to her chambers, fate would inexplicably reunite them, paths crossed once more, despite the forces that sought to keep them apart.
