Chapter two

The sounds of moaning startled me awake. I looked down from the high tree branch i was sitting on, and there was a rotter at the bottom trying to get us. I slid my throwing knife out of my boot and aimed it at it's head. I pulled my arm back and flung the blade at the rotter, and it fell to the ground dead. After four years of this world I've learned a thing or two about survival. If this was four years ago I'd be sitting in this tree staring at the thing, bawling my eyes out. I've taught Taylor how to be brave and strong, so in case something did happen too me, she'd be able to fend for herself. We should get going and find some food and shelter. Taylor was on the other side of the tree so it was kinda hard to wake her up. I decided to not wake her up and go check the snares in the stream that i had set up last night.

I untied  the knotted rope that held me to the tree and climbed down. It's getting pretty cold out we better hurry and find a place. The snare had caught a fish, which was really great since we haven't eaten in like two days. I had some matches in my backpack, but i was running low. I started a small fire and prepared the fish. The group we were with taught me since i was a girl and they thought i was too weak to go on runs and hunt, so they made me cook and wash clothes. I hated every minute we stayed there! The people were rude and there was this guy my age who was the biggest jerk ever. He always made fun of me and pushed me around. His name is Ace and i hope i never see him again.

"Taylor, wake up breakfast is ready." I say

"Okay." She groans.

She slides gently down the tree and takes a seat on the ground in front of the fire.

"Here." I say handing her a piece of fish.

"Thanks," She says taking the fish from my hands, "So what are we doing today?" She asks.

"I don't know, I was thinking maybe we could try and find a neighborhood to hit up for supplies, and maybe stay at one of the houses." I reply.

"Sounds cool." Taylor nods

After we had ate we packed up our at stuff and started walking.

"Okay, we're almost to highway 34 which will take us to Newnan." I say.

The highway was packed with cars, so we decided to go through the woods instead. It'll lower the chances of running into a heard. It took us about thirty minutes to get to Newnan, But we had went a different way so we were out of the city.

"Look, houses." I point.

"Let's go." Taylor says.

We creeped into the neighborhood trying not to draw attention to ourselves if anything was in there. We went into the first house we saw, and it was so beautiful. We found; a couple knifes, about four cans of soup, batteries, and a blanket. It's not much but it's something. The next house was locked so i had to kick the door in.  It took me about three tries but it finally opened. I think i bruised my shoulder a little, haha. With guns draw we cleared the house. There wasn't anybody or anything in here so that was good. I found a box of matches and Tay found some candy. Jeez, there's literally nothing here. As we walked out of the house i heard a gun shot.

"Taylor, go back inside!" I whisper.

She ran back inside and i crouched down behind the railing of the porch and a flower pot, it was really huge so it was a good cover spot. I heard another gun shot and it sounded really close. I heard three more shots and faint screams.

"Taylor, stay here!" I order and jump off the porch.

I ran to the gun shots and hit behind the fence, i peeked around the corner and a boy around my age was struggling to kill a rotter. Two was already lying dead on him, the third fell on him and was about to get him. I should help shouldn't I? Oh i don't know what i should do! What if he's dangerous? Well he's like my age, i can take him if he is. I step out and shoot the rotter as it almost bites the kid. I slowly walk towards him aiming my gun at his head.
