Professor Augustine Sycamore needed something; a device to hold the Kalos Pokédex. He wasn't an inventor or had been able to negotiate a contract with either Silph Co or Devon Corporation. He had reached out to Lysandre labs in hopes that maybe he could get the Pokédex on the next release. But Lysandre labs had a reputation.
Their CEO was infamous for how he rarely made deals even if they would have made him millions he rejected them just because he didn't like them. But he had sent a response email fair quickly. And Sycamore felt desperate enough to send an email back. A meeting had eventually been planned at Lysandre cafe, a property owned by Lysandre labs. That meeting was today.
Sycamore exhaled as he buttoned down the blouse he had. It was his nicest shirt for his last attempt for something to house the Pokédex. Something that was the basic responsibility of any Regional Professor. He had to make a good impression, his standard issue lab coat was crisp and clean for once. Not singed or stained with coffee, with over stuffed pockets of Arceus only knows what. He once even found what he suspected was a week old cookie... that was not a fun experience to clean out the washer. He had traded his normal sweat pants and loafers for black dress pants and dress shoes.
He was currently removing the curlers from his hair, even though his hair was naturally curly he couldn't afford his hair to not cooperate today. Mr. Fleur de lis was known to be oriented on his looks, he may be generous but very prideful and looks oriented. So Sycamore had to be presentable, Diantha had approved this outfit for today. So he knew he at least looked good in the dress sense... hopefully he reached Mr. Fleur de lis's standards.
A good impression could very easily make or break this meeting.
Sycamore jumped as he heard a low rumble. He shoot around to see his Garchomp standing in the doorway. Garchomp let out a sort of sigh and motioned to the clock with his head. 3:56... he was four minutes away from being late! Garchomp let out a cry of surprise as Sycamore shot out of the room and down the stairs of the lab like a motivated Sharpedo. He fought the bike lock his bike was in for a minute before giving up and just decided to run. He was absolutely hopeless with roller skates and it was an almost miracle he had enough balance to even ride a bike tripping over his own shadow quite often.Sycamore gasped for air as he finally arrived at the very red cafe. He focused on filling his lungs with the necessary oxygen for a minute or two before walking in. It was even red on the inside... Sycamore had just thought it was red glass. Looking back outside it was indeed red glass. The whole place was packed, servers rushing to different tables taking and giving orders. His seat was apparently reserved, and there was only two empty seats in the entire cafe, Sycamore claimed the one with his name on a name tag sitting on the counter.
Mr. Fleur de lis wasn't there, maybe he was in the bathroom. The barista blinked looking at him. He was a very tall intimidating man with bright red hair and blue eyes that looked a little too intense for a barista. He was definitely very attractive and seemed well muscled under his sweater. It was almost funny compared to the bright red apron with a playing Litleo on it. He didn't have a name tag.
"It's 4:14, you're late."
Sycamore sighed his legs beginning to spasm from the unexpected work out. Guess the barista knew about the meeting.
"I know, I spent too long getting ready and had to run here. Two and a half miles in about eighteen minutes. I'd say that's decently impressive?" The barista chuckled lightly as Sycamore practically face planted onto the counter. His lungs and legs still screaming at him for the pain. He tasted blood which he hoped was nothing, he would occasionally taste it during his gym classes when he was still in school.
"Most people can do about three miles in that time." Sycamore exhaled feeling mildly pathetic after the barista pointed that out.
"Do you want something? Some tea might help after that mini marathon you look like you just ran. I recommend our Green tea with Ginger."
Sycamore looked up.
"Oh no I couldn't, I think I forgot my wallet." Sycamore checked his pockets and indeed the only things he had brought was his Garchomp's pokeball and random key stone. Sycamore showed the Luxuryball to the tall barista. The barista shrugged.
"It's on the house then, no one will notice a few pastries and some tea missing." The barista motioned around the packed cafe, it hadn't gotten any emptier in the time Sycamore sat there.
Sycamore jumped as the barista leaned down on the other side of the counter, he was definitely very tall. He wondered silently what his parents fed him for those results. Either way he was very handsome especially up close.
His hair and beard were perfectly groomed into a large style, not quite unlike a Pyroars mane. His eyes held a curious look but held a clear intelligence, Sycamore wouldn't have been surprised if he was the cafe manager and had been pulled out of his office because of the rush. His expression wasn't one of someone used to working in the front, an intense almost scary frown made its home on his face. Yet he held himself with the confidence of someone who was in complete control of the chaos around them, like this was an everyday occurrence to him. He was also decently terrifying, granted someone who is debatably seven feet tall is flat out terrifying.
"Oh no, I'm afraid I can't. I'm here for a meeting with Mr. Lysandre Fluer de lis."
The man blinked shocked. Guess he only knew about the meeting and not who it was with.
"And I instist. It's no skin off my back and what's twelve dollars tops against the twelve thousand this place makes a day." The man slid over a napkin with a delicious looking coconut brownie and a delicious looking pastry on it. Sycamore was trying to hide the fact he was salivating, he hadn't eaten yet today and those sweets looked delicious.
"Besides you look horrible, all red and sweaty. Eat up, wash up in the restroom and I'll have some tea for when you're out." The man smiled, it didn't make him look less intimidating. Besides Mr. Fluer de lis wasn't here for some reason so he minus well indulge the barista. Plus he did need to look good; so Sycamore nodded. He slowly ate the brownie and pastry trying to look mildly civilized, and not like he had forgotten to eat both today and yesterday.
Once he was done he got up and slowly walked to the bathroom. He could feel the barista's eyes following him.
Once Sycamore was out of the restroom and feeling much better he sat down. A nice cup of tea was instantly set down in front of him. Sycamore smiled looking up at the barista who was now sending out someone's order. Once that was done he turned his attention back to Sycamore.
"So tell me about your work mon ami?" Sycamore looked up. The man was adding some '2% steamed milk' to a woman's coffee. He looked at Sycamore and smiled. He didn't look scary then and he seemed to be rather friendly.
"Well I have recently discovered a phenomena I refer to as Mega Evolution. It's the same thing the Champion Diantha uses to give her Gardevoir that new form."
"The ball gown look? Quite marvelous if you ask me." The man asked.
"Yes, the ball gown. During Mega evolution the Pokémon becomes quite powerful and goes from a BST of 518 to one of 618."
"A full one hundred points higher than normal?"
"That appears to be the standard. Every time I have come across the mega evolution phenomenon they raise exactly a hundred points."
"Impressive, I wonder if there's a way to mega evolve Pyroar?" Sycamore looked up at the man. He was taking some croissants out of the case. "I am quite partial to the breed." He quickly explained.
"Ah, well once we find out what allows it to happen maybe." The man nodded smiling briefly grabbing one of his pokeballs, a well worn pokeball. It was clearly quite old and well loved. It was clearly the oldest by at least a couple years. The next oldest was the only other standard pokeball. Then a Duskball and a healball were the other two. The other two were far more recent, not a scratch.
"What do you think of your team?" The man blinked looking at Sycamore. He was quiet for a few seconds.
"They are all rather dear to me, my Pyroar is my closest companion and has been since I was a little boy."
"Oh that's so cute!" Sycamore explained imagining a tiny and cute version of the man before him. Large blue eyes, a fluff of red hair holding a Litleo. The man immediately turned red at Sycamore's statement.
"Oh- Thank you professor." Sycamore happily finished off his tea. The man smiled once his blush subsided. He looked genuinely happy and pleased.
"You're truly a genuine person mon ami huh?" Sycamore blinked. The conversation paused before it slowly continued.
Hours slowly passed as the cafe emptied. It was at first mostly about Sycamore's work, the barista seemed fascinated by it all. However that didn't stop Sycamore from learning about the man, his beloved Pokemon and their antics. His spoilt yet majestic Pyroar, his shiny Gyarados he clearly adored and his gyarados loved him right back. His stern Honchkrow which kept everyone in line and on time and his Mienshao who knew nothing but mischief and Chaos. Steadily the conversation approached the stories of everything that's happened with their Pokemon. From stories of Charmander and Finnikin teaming up against Chespin and Squirtle, Gabite coming to the defenseless Chespins' aid to stories of the man finding and helping a beached shiny magikarp which was so covered in mud, clay and sand he thought it was a normal magikarp until his mom showed him how to bathe a water type. Finally the clock caught Sycamore's eye. 7:55. He had been there for almost three hours. Mr. Fluer de lis never even showed up... he probably left before Sycamore even arrived.
"Mon ami, what's wrong?"
"Oh, he never showed up for our meeting. This was my last chance to find something to house the Pokédex." The man opened his mouth to speak but Sycamore had left before the words left his mouth.
"I am Lysandre Fleur de lis...". He blinked. He had even forgotten about the meeting about an hour into the conversation.
Lysandre exhaled. He knew he needed to rectify this. So he walked into the back removing the apron and put on his coat. He had work to do, unfortunately he couldn't just run a cafe all day. Mega corporations don't just run themselves, especially without much corruption.
