The plan, born of desperation, was risky. While the rest of the group scouted the perimeter, Elena would attempt to use her disturbing visions as a twisted navigation tool. With each chilling glimpse into the facility, she would relay what she saw, guiding them on a path hopefully less fraught with danger.
The whispers, sensing her determination, ramped up their assault. They painted vivid images of excruciating pain, of her mind being flayed open by the entities, used as a conduit to pull more of their kind into the world.
Elena shuddered but pushed back. Each stab of fear was fuel now. They had opened a door into her mind - she would turn it into a two-way street.
"Three guards by the northern entry," she managed to say through gritted teeth, a vision of armed men flanking a reinforced gate flashing through her mind. "One's distracted, looking towards the east."
These guards though showed no signs of infection but Elena could sense that they were somehow controlled, like puppets on strings.
Thomas nodded grimly. "Alright, Patrick, you draw that one off. Rosa and I will take care of the remaining two."
It worked. The synchronicity between her visions and reality was unnerving yet effective. Elena was their eyes inside a fortress designed to keep secrets. It was a gruesome advantage, born of the violation they had inflicted on her.
The further they delved into the complex, the more intense the mental assault became. The whispers shifted, taking on Alex's voice, twisting his reassurances into taunts laced with despair.
"You're too late, Elena… they've won... they consumed me…"
A shriek almost escaped her lips. She recognized Alex's terror, a fear now echoing in her own soul. The entities wanted to break her, to extinguish the spark of resistance she clung to.
Elena focused on Rosa's steady breathing, on Thomas's unwavering step. They were her anchor, a tangible connection to the world she was fighting for.
"Experimentation chamber, two floors down," she gasped out, sweat beading on her forehead. A sickening scene of sterile white tiles and surgical instruments had seared its way into her mind. "They're...there's a rift. I can see it."
"The source," Thomas growled, his expression grim.
As they neared the chamber, the whispers became a cacophony, threatening to drown out her own thoughts. Yet, amidst the chaos, the woman's voice returned, clearer than before.
"He will come for you. He sees you even now."
An icy dread cascaded through her. There was something else here, something beyond the invisible entities. Someone who could see her, perhaps through her visions. The thought was paralyzing.
Reaching the chamber door, Thomas prepared to breach. Elena steeled herself, then pushed her mind outward, seeking a glimpse of what lay within.
The sight that slammed into her mental eye nearly shattered her. It was the young woman from her earliest visions. Not strapped to a table this time, but standing amidst a writhing vortex of inky energy. Yet what chilled Elena to the bone was the woman's gaze – locked directly on her, a flicker of malevolent recognition in her eyes.
In that instant, Elena understood. The woman was not another victim, but somehow complicit in this horror. And whoever the 'He' the whispers foretold was, he was connected to her.
She recoiled, yanking her consciousness inward like a burnt hand from a flame.
"Elena!" Rosa was at her side, concern etched on her face. "What did you see?"
"I… I don't know," Elena lied, a fresh wave of terror washing over her. "But whatever's in there… it's worse than we imagined."
