"Come here my child."
There she lay; your mother. She looked like a corpse wrapped up in a scratchy woolen blanket and it made you sick. She had been bedridden for months, consumed by illness. You did everything in your power to make her feel better, but there's only so much a seven year old can do.
You scurried to your mother's bedside per her request. She weakly raised her hand and pointed to a book on the other side of the room, "I want to hear it once more, please."
The book, containing the tale of the infamous Captain Flint, had been your favorite ever since you could remember. It wasn't because of the exciting tale, though it still gave you a thrill, but the joy and excitement that lit up your mother's face as she sat with you, listening to the story. The book reminded her of her husband who had left when you were just barely two years of age.
He told his wife that he wanted to go explore in hopes of finding a place suited for his daughter's inevitably bright future; he also said he'd be gone no longer than a month. However, after a month had passed, your father had not come home. Your mother never gave up hope that he would arrive one day. That was until an old man appeared at your doorstep. He gave the news that the boat he boarded a little over a month ago had wrecked. The same boat your father had been on.
Your mother didn't hesitate to ask, "Were there any survivors?" The old man spoke up, " No ma'am, just me." When that last word escaped his mouth your mother crumbled to her knees, sobbing. Her one true love, gone, and her child would never get to truly meet him. The only thing she had left of him was the book he was going to give to his child on her next birthday.
You walked to the other side of the room, grabbed the book, and headed back to your mother's bed. You climbed onto the stool that was positioned next to her head, pulling the large book with you. Carefully, you placed the book on her lap and the story began.
"...And then, gathering up their spoils, vanished without a trace. Flint's secret trove was never found, but stories have persisted that it remains hidden somewhere at the farthest reaches of the galaxy, stowed with riches beyond imagination, the loot of a thousand worlds, Treasure Planet."
As the story finished, you looked down at your mother expecting to see that smile she always wore when she heard this story, instead you discovered her eyes closed. Something within you alerted that she wasn't sleeping and you began to shake her.
"Mom, mom, please wake up." You began to panic, still shaking her vigorously, until you had a moment of clarity and decided you would try and find help in town.
You darted out of your house not caring to put on shoes, or even close the front door. The only thing on your mind was to help your mother.
It was the middle of the night, so when you finally made it, you were faced with the empty, poorly lit streets of a usually loud and bustling town. You didn't care, you ran up and down the streets screaming and crying for someone to help you, but to no avail.
After some time your lungs ached, your face stung with tears, and your little legs had grown tired of running. You sat down on a street corner, shivering in the cool night air, tears still falling down your face. You buried your head in your knees and continued to sob, but softer this time, until you heard loud footsteps approach.
You jerked your head upward and your eyes met a large man with a robotic arm, leg, ear, and eye. You heard a small, mechanical whirring sound as his golden, robotic eye moved, seemingly to look at you.
"Lass, what are you crying about?" The man bellowed. "You look as if someone killed yer puppy."You looked up at the man, tears still shining in your eyes, " My mom, she's sick." The man bent down to your height looking upon you with a saddened expression. You looked into his eyes, "Please sir, will you help?"
The man gave a faint grin and said, "Of course I'll help yer dear mother." Together the two of you stood and you led the way to your house.
After a while of walking, you finally saw your house in the distance, the door still swung open from your hasty exit earlier. You hadn't realized just how fast you had run. Run to find help for your mother, the last person in the world you could find solace in.
You snapped your head upward at the man with an urgent look on your face. "There. That's my house. My mom's in there," you began running toward your house with the man's robotic hand in yours.
Suddenly, there was a loud boom followed by some intense heat, and you were knocked out. When you opened your eyes, you were met with a horrible sight; your house engulfed in flames. The heartbreak of your destroyed home was soon overshadowed by the worry for your mother. You stood up quickly, and as you were about to dart off into the wall of flames where your home once stood, a metal hand gripped your arm and pulled you back.
"Let me go!" you shouted as you whipped your head around to face the cyborg man.
"No, it's too dangerous" he responded, pulling you further away from the explosion sight.
"But my mother.." you whimpered, tears beginning to well up in your eyes once more.
"She's gone, child."
