People say that when you're about to die, life flashes through your eyes. Well, that's bullshit. There is excruciating pain and sadness. When your blood is flowing out of your body like a mad river or when you see your cellmate's guts falling out of his chest well you would know. You look at the grass and wonder if it was always this red, if that was how it was supposed to be. If not, well you're in for a treat. It's ironic, people say they're ready to start a war for the ones they love but forget that nobody wins in a war. There is nothing but blood, pain and sadness. The sad part was that I would do it all again.
The funny thing in all this is that life goes on even on burnt grounds. I can see it from my twisted angle on the ground, where a flower stood untouched. I laugh, well more like a grunt. I couldn't believe it, there was one single white flower untouched by the madness of the world in this hell whole of land that was once sacred. But now there are only red stains and body parts. I didn't know if it was an omen or just life laughing at me.
Silent tears fell down my cheeks. The flour reminded me of her, except it was too white. It reminded me of my lover and soul mate but she was nowhere near a flower. She was a stupid, sadistic, anti-social sociopath, who killed without blinking. But she was mine. She was mine.
A hard on my cheek slap woke me from my dreamlike state. "Wakey wakey, sleeping woman"
Speaking of the devil. I adjusted my eyes to see a beautiful brown haired woman with bright red eyes crouched beside me. I always thought she was at her prettiest when she was drenched in blood. The colour looked good on her.
"It's sleeping beauty Jimhaya" I groaned as she lifted me up on my feet. Pain rushed to my head and for a moment everything went black. I blinked a few times to rid of the dizziness as Jimhaya kept me steady. "You're late" I accused her.
"Sorry, I was busy looking for my shoes, they seemed to have disappeared" she said sarcastically. Jimhaya always took her shoes off when she went on a hunt. I asked her why many times but I never understood properly.
"Ha, I remember why I married you" I mocked. "So optimistic"
"And I am starting to wonder why I ever asked you" she replied with the same tone.
I was about to answer when a girl opened the building door and stepped out into the night. My body froze at the knowledge of who it was.
"Zefra?" I whispered. The tall blonde girl looked our way and her solemn face brightened a little.
"Mom!" she whispered loudly and crashed herself against me. Her being over six feet it felt more like a crush of the bones than a hug. I yelped as she squeezed my broken body. Zefra took a step back and looked at me apologically. "I'm sorry? Are you okay?"
"I'm better now that you both are here" I told her as I grazed her cheek with my bloody hands. The teenager had a few bruises on her face which told me she been fighting again. I turned to Jimhaya and glared at her and if looks could kill, she would be ten feet in the ground by now.
"You brought our daughter here?" I hissed menacingly. Jimhaya rolled her red eyes and gave me a pointed look.
"Of course not. The bitch doesn't do a single thing I say. She followed me"
"And lucky I did because I saved your pathetic ass," Zefra raised her head high.
"And I saved yours countless of times so don't ever think we are equal. Now be a good girl and pick that one up" Jimhaya snapped her fingers and pointed to Christoph, my cellmate, who had woken up and was staring at us from the ground.
"Don't tell me what to do old hag"
"First of all, I am not a hag so know your damn mythology. Second of all I withhold the title of your 'mother' and I say you are grounded. So for once in your life do as I you're told and pick him up"
With that, Jimhaya started to drag me out of the clearing where I was found.
"Ah, it's so good to be home" I sighed. I honestly missed their constant banter. I was sure I was never going to hear their insults again and that alone warmed my heart. I couldn't wait to see the others.
"We are not home yet honey" Jimhaya said. I ignored her and enjoyed her warmth that I had been craving for such a long time. We had to step over a few dead bodies and slowly made our way through the forest when I remembered something.
"What about Roberta?"
"She's with Davian and Jasmine" Jimhaya reassured me. "She's the one who told us where you were"
Behind us I heard Zefra dragging a limping Christoph through the forest. We slowly walked away from the tower which held me captive. We tried to be as quiet as possible but our luck was not on our side tonight. Wolf howls could be heard through the night and they were getting closer and closer.
We picked up pace but had to change trails a few times so that the hunting of rabid dire wolves wouldn't catch us so quickly. It was the adrenaline pumping in my system kept me awake. The deep cuts in my flesh had not stopped bleeding and I had trouble staying on my feet. I couldn't really see from one eye because it was swollen from the beatings. Everything was blurry and I was starting we were never going to make it. The only thing that kept me from stopping right now was the fear of getting caught and dragged back to that place. I refused to go back there again. It had broken me once and I had barely escaped. I was so scared of what he would do if he put his hands on me again.
I heard Jimhaya curse as she stopped moving. I lifted my head and found that we were by a cliff that separated us from the ocean. The wolves were really close now because we could hear them growl from a few meters behind us.
"Zefra, take the boy to your brother and wait-" Jimhaya was cut off when a wolf pounce on her and bit into her shoulder. Her body jerked forwards dragging me with her and we started to freefall off the cliff.
"Moms!" Zefra's voice rang through my ear. I felt my wife's arms wrapped around me just before we hit the cold water and everything went into blackness.
