Most of the time stories start with a new school, or life. Thankfully I can say differently. My life was normal enough before I met Jane Streak. She was the new girl. Not me. I was the nerdy girl who would read instead of sleep and had big glasses. But not the kind that screamed geek. The kind that brought out your eyes and made them look bigger.
And I don't think I'm ugly. I'm not pretty but I'm not ugly either. In my opinion at least. Long brown hair like dark straw with dead ends. Brown eyes and no freckles or blemishes on my face.
Anyways I live in Nevada. Rorith Nevada, a small town in the middle of literally nowhere with no sign of existence for the most part. But life here is not that bad. I mean there is internet and Xboxes....great clothing stores and great restaurants but only two schools and one football stadium. Life can get crowded.
Very crowded. So it word spreads fast, like fire.
I was thinking that when I walked into the 9th grade cafeteria. You know instantly when something has changed. Especially when every student is staring at it. Or them. That was the day that seven new students arrived. It was unheard of. It was hard enough to get one student but seven? They were brothers and sisters though so it wasn't too wierd. What was wierd was how they all sat together that day and stared wide eyed at the other students who crowded around them. All except one.
This one girl sat in the middle of the group at her table , as comfortable as possible. She was even filing her nails which were an impressing shade of light blue.
One of the students looked way too young to be in the ninth grade but i didn't question it. Instead I slumped down in my seat beside my best friend Katie, who didn't concern herself with things that wouldn't help her get home sooner, like me.
"So," I said, pausing to rip the plastic covering off my plastic-ware. "How did you do on Mr. Binko's book assignment?" I asked. I stabbed my fork into a biscuit while she thought about an answer. That's when I heard a scream and the cafeteria exploded into shouting and screaming of encouragement.
One boy from the strange group of newcomers had started a fight with someone I knew. Mike Yanky. The kid (that kid at every school) who had his head screwed on too tight.
I tried not to laugh as the new kid slammed his fists repeatively into Mike's chest. This may seem like nothing to laugh at, but Mike was known for his big mouth and "skills" in fighting. Now he was being pummeled. To make things worse for Mike it was by the kid who looked too young to be in the 9th grade.
"Hey! Hey! Hey!" Mr. Reiner cried racing towards the tussling boys.
"Serves Mike right," I muttered. "He always tries to 'show the new kids who's in charge.'"
Katie was chuckling, her blonde hair in her face from laughing so hard. "Mike screamed-" laughter -" so loud!"
Mr. Reiner had pried them apart now. "Since you're new I'll let this be a warning, but don't ever attack another student again! Mike head to the nurse. I'll meet you there."
He looked back at the new kid and clicked his pen. "What's your name?" He said with a sigh.
The boy didn't seem shaken at all. "My name is Kale Streak."
Mr. Reiner raised his bushy eyebrow while jotting it down. "Kale, huh? Like Jupiter's Moon? Or just Kale?"
Kale seemed confused. "Just Kale."
Mr. Reiner was obsessed with astronomy. Especially moons and stars. He even named his son after a star.
Suddenly I felt Katie jab my shoulder. "Hey, are you gonna eat your cookie?" She asked eyeing it.
"Go ahead,"I mumbled.
I pulled out my book and began to read. It was an epic love story about two young fools with dark secrets. What could be better?
