Attorney David visited Mayor Alice the following morning, briefing her on her case and providing her with the necessary paperwork for the upcoming Senate hearing.
"Alice, I'm not scaring you, but if ever there's something you're hiding from me, better inform me now. You can trust me with every detail because I'm your lawyer." Attorney Stephen David spoke.
"Attorney, I'm true to you, to myself, and to my people," Alice said as she sat down, offering the attorney a cup of coffee. Standing face-to-face with her lawyer, the mayor claimed, "I'm not hiding anything." Nevertheless, her tone conveys fear.
The two are now having a conversation in Alice's living room. It's past seven in the morning, and it's Saturday. She hadn't had her breakfast yet because Attorney David had just arrived at her door.
"I do believe in you. It's just that I feel like the Senate won't let you get away with it; whether you are guilty or not, they'll find a way to put you in jail." Stephen sighed. He doesn't want Alice to overthink, but based on what he sees, it is that way, and he knows how politics works.
Alice then held her attorney's hand, as if she were a low-born person asking for mercy: "Stephen, just ask me whatever documents you need. Don't leave me alone with this; I'm begging you," the woman said, tears swelling up her eyes.
However, her gaze shifted to the second floor, perplexed as to why one of the rooms had slowly opened when she was alone in the house. Suddenly, a woman came out of it.
Senator Risa.
Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the air was thick with unspoken questions. Alice quickly wiped the tears from her cheeks, her expression a mix of embarrassment and urgency. She subtly signaled to Risa to stay where she was and not come down the stairs just yet.
Risa panicked at what she saw and quickly retreated back inside the room. It suddenly sank in that she was still at Alice's residence, not in some hotel room where she usually stayed when she couldn't drive home.
She remembered why she had fallen asleep so deeply.
After Alice had passed out from drunkenness and Risa had come downstairs, she couldn't stand the mess. She found empty bottles of wine scattered around, paper bags in disarray, and leftover food left out on the table. The chaos had been overwhelming, and she had spent hours trying to clean up, organizing the mess, and tidying the place up.
She was supposed to rest for only half an hour, but she ended up sleeping until 8 in the morning. The comfortable mattress certainly didn't help; it had lured her into a deep, unintended sleep.
After a few minutes, someone opened Risa's door, it was mayor Alice.
"Senator, you're still here?" asked Alice, who's panting as she had just run up the stairs.
The senator bit her lower lip as she nodded, blaming herself for being stuck in this situation. If she hadn't come, she wouldn't be trapped in this room with Alice.
"Has he left?" asked by the Senator. Alice nodded in response, but she's unease.
"Uh, but my farm worker are already scattered around doing their works and -"
A sudden phone call from Alice's phone interrupted them. It was from Attorney Stephen.
The room fell into complete silence. The distance between Alice and the senator was just right for Risa to overhear the conversation clearly through the phone. Every word echoed in the stillness, heightening the tension.
"Forgot to tell you, but there's a car parked in front of your gate. Do you know the owner of this?" Attorney Stephen asked from the other line.
Alice's eyes widened with concern, and she glanced instinctively towards the window, seeing Risa's car. On the other hand, Risa, sensing the gravity of the situation, remained still and attentive, her mind racing with possible implications.
"That's my car!" Risa whispered urgently to Alice after glancing through the window. Her glare was sharp, filled with frustration and disbelief.
Alice's eyes widened in realization. "Your car?" she whispered back, her voice trembling slightly as she put the phone away from her mouth.
"You want me to report it and get it towed?" Stephen asked from the other end of the line.
"Report? Towed?!" Alice echoed, her voice tinged with confusion and anxiety.
"Yes, if it's an unknown vehicle and it's been there for a while, it might be best to have it removed," Stephen suggested.
Alice's mind raced. She couldn't let Risa's car be towed; it would draw even more unwanted attention. Trying to think quickly, she said, "No, don't do that. It's... it's probably nothing. I'll handle it."
Risa overheard the conversation and gave Alice a sharp look.
Alice took a deep breath and tried to sound more composed. "Stephen, thank you for letting me know. I'll check it out myself. No need to report it."
"Okay, if that's what you want."
Attorney Stephen ended the call and the two took a deep breath of relief.
Just as Attorney Stephen left Alice's farm, Risa attempted to search for her car key to leave, but Alice stopped her.
"Just like I mentioned, the farm workers are outside doing their duties. If you go out now, they will see you," Alice explained, searching for the perfect words to say to Risa.
Risa, visibly irritated, crossed her arms. "Then how am I going to leave this damn place?" she demanded, her frustration clear.
Alice took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. "I think you have to stay here until 5 pm," she said softly.
"5 pm!?" Risa echoed, her eyes widening with disbelief. "Are you serious?"
Alice nodded. "The workers will be gone by then. It's the safest time for you to leave without being seen."
Risa paced the room, her irritation mounting. "This is ridiculous! I can't stay here all day."
"I know it's not ideal," Alice said, her voice gentle but firm. "But it's the best option we have right now. If the workers see you, it could raise questions we can't afford to answer."
Risa's shoulders slumped, her frustration giving way to resignation.
