xiii. the black lake
"WELCOME TO THE SECOND TASK," Dumbledore spoke over the loudspeaker. "Last night something was stolen from each of our champions. A treasure of sorts. These four treasures, one for each champion, now lie on the
bottom of the black lake."Cassia weaved through the dense crowd, tugging Lee along by the hand. Her expression was tense, her movements hurried. George and Indigo turned to meet them, immediately sensing that something was amiss.
"Where's Deleine?" George asked, his voice laced with worry the moment they were close enough to hear.
Fred grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "Chill, mate. She's probably just in her room, having a lie-in."
Cassia shook her head, her face tight with concern. "That's the problem. She isn't! We've been looking for her all morning, and she's nowhere to be found. It's like she's vanished into thin air!"
Indigo's gaze shifted to the task unfolding before them—the dark, ominous waters of the Black Lake. Her eyes narrowed, an uneasy feeling creeping up her spine. "Guys," she muttered, trying to catch their attention as the others continued to talk over each other in panic. "Guys!" she finally raised her voice, cutting through the chatter. "I think... I think she might be... down there." Indigo pointed towards the lake, her voice barely above a whisper as Dumbledore continued his explanation.
"In order to win each champion need only find their treasure and return to the surface. Simple enough. Except for this, they will have one hour to do so and one hour only. After that, they'll be on their own." Dumbledore finished, his words hanging in the air like a foreboding spell.
Cassia's face went pale as the realization hit her. "That doesn't make any sense—why would she be a treasure for any of the contestants?" Cassia asked, "Oh!" she gasped, her eyes widening as the truth dawned on her. Indigo and Cassia exchanged a look, their expressions suddenly grave, before they both fell silent.
"What?" George pressed, his anxiety mounting. "You lot seriously think my girlfriend's been stuffed under the Black Lake, and you're not going to tell me why?" His voice was edged with disbelief and fear.
"Shh, it's starting," Indigo whispered urgently, her attention snapping back to the lake as the champions prepared for the task ahead.
The murmurs of the crowd quieted, a heavy silence settling as the gravity of the situation took hold. The tension around them thickened like the mist rolling off the surface of the Black Lake.
