Protection was all I thought about when I saw my sibling, if she is left unprotected then I have failed as an older sister. We are flocking, one of the last of our kind. We are winged creatures with two pairs of wings: one pair by our ears and the other on our backs. The wings on our backs reach a span of 16 feet.
We have been traveling toward safety for many months, We stayed in the silence of our long saunter, Crossing deserts and forests. We have journeyed through portals that led us into different biomes, with the nether being the hottest territory we've encountered.
"We have been walking for months Exodus. How much longer should thou be until satisfied?" my sister is whining like she does most nights.
"Until we found the perfect place Artah," I said getting up from my spot on the ground near the fire.
"You say that every time I ask," she glared at me. I rolled my eyes.
"Be my guest, dear sister. Find a place, then let me know when you find one," I said, irritated. Why can't she understand the safest place to be is on the road? We need to keep moving.
"We have been walking and running for hundreds of miles," Artah was getting angry. "What creature could possibly hurt us? Just because you don't trust anyone doesn't mean I shouldn't—"
"Stop talking," I interrupted, hearing something in the distance.
"What! No, Exdous, you can't ignore this conversation every time I try to start it."
"Shut up, I'm serious. I hear something." I grabbed my bow and started to nock an arrow. I turned my head towards Artah and nodded at her bow and sword lying next to her.
She rolled her eyes and grabbed her bow. "Asshole," she muttered under her breath.
It sounded like one person. This idiot couldn't possibly sabotage themselves. Whatever, it's not my problem; I have my sister to protect. I launched my arrow toward the shadow—
"Wait," my sister said, a little too late.
"A little late for that," I replied with a grin, as Artah started to run towards the shadow. "Artah, you have to be kidding me,"
I caught up to her, running close behind. "What are you doing?" I whispered.
"They're hurt; we must save them!" she insisted.
"Your trustworthiness will be the death of us," I warned. Her eyes were set on helping them.
"Come on, sister, what if they die?"
"Then they die because there was an idiot!" I snapped.
"I'll make the next two meals!" Artah begged. It was a tempting offer, to say the least.
"Fine, but—" I started.
"Yes!" she clapped, then I quickly added, "But! If they try to hurt you, I won't hesitate to kill them." Artah nodded quickly and turned toward the river. I muttered inconsiderate words under my breath while following her. As we approached the end of the bank, Artah was completely and utterly immersed.
"If we're going to save the person, you better get out of the water," I said, rubbing the bridge of my nose. She briskly got up from the water and jogged into the forest, with me swiftly behind her. The person we were looking for was a boy around seventeen with blonde hair.
"We need to get the arrow out of his shoulder," Artah said in a distressed tone.
"Hmmm." I started. "We will have to pull it out then," I stated the obvious.
"Well yeah of course- Not it!" She quickly said. I laughed and shook my head.
"Okay, put your hand over his mouth, he'll try to scream." She did as I recommended. I then put my left hand over his wound, pressing ever so slightly on it.
"One...Two." I started counting. "Three!" I instantaneously pulled the arrow out. Right on cue, I heard a muffled scream. I looked up at him, I looked straight through his blue eyes.
He looked terrified.
"Get the fuck away from m-me," the boy said, trying to crawl toward a tree behind him. Swinging a small dagger in front of him. How did I miss that?
"Ha! Do you believe that will stop me from killing you?" I questioned him. Walking towards him quickly, kicking his dagger out of his hand and taking it.
"Exodus!" Artah said shoving me out of the way. "We are here to help him not kill. You promised."
"Whatever"
Artah starts to walk closer to the boy. To pull the arrow out of his shoulder. The boy was not liking the Idea of Artah getting close to him.
"Let me help you," she says in a calming voice. The boy had no intention of getting calmer. "I'm here to help."
"You the one who shot me," he says high pitched. Trying to shove my sister's hand away.
"That would be my sister doing," she says– the boy looked at me as I stood in the background near a tree leaning with my arms crossed and glaring towards him. I don't like him. I guess he got the message.
"Why you–" he tries to start.
"Exodus, do you have the med kit on you?"
"Does it look like I have the med kit?" I say sarcastically, she gave me the look mom would do if I said something smartass.
"It's back at camp.." I said kicking a rock near me in annoyance.
"Well then, we must get back there then?" she starts "you carry him."
"Huh!" both me and the boy say at the same time. With that Artah starts walking towards camp. "Come on!" she says.
I walked towards the boy and he stiffened up. I bend down towards his ear,
"Listen, if it was just me I would have left you for dead" With that I grabbed him with ease and put him over my shoulder.
"Hey, Hey! Let's talk about this, you should just leave me there– my friends will come for me.-"
"What did you say," I said stopping in my tracks people were around these I made sure that no one was around here before coming here– I asked multiple villagers and they said nothing was there.
"How many people are here–" I start to interrogate, but Artah soon comes over.
"What's taking so long!?" she yelled, this isn't good. I turned my head towards the boy.
"You're lucky she likes you."
