koi haseen khataI sat beside Arisha's hospital bed, gently stroking her hair as she lay there, her tiny frame looking even smaller among the wires and tubes. She looked so fragile. She stirred, her eyes slowly opening.
"Papa," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Will Mumma be here after my surgery?"
My heart ached at her question. I had hoped she wouldn't ask, but I knew this day would come. I forced a smile, keeping my voice steady for her sake.
"Yes, sweetheart. Mumma will be here, She promised she would come."
Arisha's eyes brightened a little. "She promised, Papa?"
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. "Haan, Isha. Mumma will be here." I said, kissing her forehead gently.
She smiled faintly and closed her eyes, drifting back to sleep. I took a deep breath. As much as I dreaded seeing Navya again, I had to put Arisha first.
Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I glanced at the caller ID: Rishabh.
I stood up, kissed Arisha's forehead once more, and nodded at the doctor before stepping out of the room.
I walked down the corridor, my footsteps echoing off the sterile walls. When I was a safe distance from Arisha's room, I answered the call.
"Hello"
"Arnav," Rishabh's voice came through, steady as always. "Are you sure you want to meet Navya?"
I hesitated for a moment, then nodded, even though he couldn't see me. "Yes, I'm sure."
Rishabh sighed.
"I understand. I know someone who can get us entry to her house."
A mixture of relief and apprehension washed over me. "Thanks, Rishabh. We'll go this evening."
