As far as my four new companions go, we are off to a rocky start. After the goblin cave we consulted the map and decided to head toward a hilly area north west of us. It would take about 3 hours travel, so off we went.
Making our way through a heavily wooded area, we stumbled upon a direwolf snoozing in the mid afternoon shade. We were coming up with a plan when a spear of ice shot out from the opposite tree line and impaled the creature's skull. We were caught off guard of course, but then the one who shot the spear appeared. It was a rather tall elf with an eyepatch over one eye. The other was an icy blue that almost seemed to glow. He was rightly suspicious but eventually introduced himself as Galen. The name sounded familiar at the time and got the wheels in my mind spinning. He warned us of Trolls in the nearby hills we were headed to. As for Galen, he wandered east from us.
Upon arrival at the hills we decided to heed Galen's warning and proceeded with caution. Just as well we did as we got the jump on a troll and three of it's goblin cohorts. The terrain made things complicated and we had to watch our positioning, but I managed to score an outstanding killing blow on the troll and one of the goblins, bringing my point total up to 23. After regrouping in front of yet another cave entrance, I suggested we rest as it was getting late. That idiot Ace wanted to keep pushing and explore the cave. So we split up and I set camp with Orin. I shared some of the food I found with him then had an idea.
See my star map is a prism shaped crystal that projects constellations when exposed to light. So as the sun set I tapped my crook and used the light to project my constellation maps, comparing them to the night sky above me. Didn't take long. Chalice, Griffin, Ankh, Viper, and Shield. All visible in the South West of the continent this time of year. I then mentally compared that knowledge with the large map they had at the temple and realized the only place we could be is the Forgotten Woods.
Which was about as bad as it gets. Nobody lives in the woods and anyone who enters is never heard from. So at that point I resigned to the fact that the only way out was to complete the hooded man's game.
Interlude
At this point I should write about how I felt about my companions up to this point.
Kun - Handy with those axes and knows which way is up. That's really about it though. Doesn't really show any kind of initiative in battle or otherwise and probably doesn't know what a map is. Still, he doesn't have a deceptive bone in his body, so I'd say I trust him the most right now.
Thalion - A man of the cloth like me. I am a bit nervous that he has some connection to the Dawnbringers, but they typically don't use polearms. They would also know to light their way somehow if they can't see. Even still, I will be trusting but a bit wary.
Orin - Dwarf man is smart when it comes to his gadgets. A man of few words otherwise. Maybe I should entertain his hubris just to garner some camaraderie. Not so good with his spells though, aim always seems a bit off. He does seem to be better with more supportive techniques.
Ace - Never in my life have I met someone with a personality like this guy. At first glance he does seem charming, but he's arrogant and maybe a bit narcissistic. He also likes to fight. A lot. He only judges people on how "useful" they are to him. I'll be cordial if he apologizes for threatening to kill me three times. Until then the cycle can have him for all I care.
