Hi, this is my first story that I'm doing so, please, constructive criticism only!
~Whatever is in between these is a flashback/memory~
POV: King Andrew Van Dune III
"We need more people in the war, Your Majesty," my advisor says.
"I agree, we shall send the young men from the lower districts to fight in the war." I reply. No one would ever speak up against the king or so I thought, I had just finished announcing it to District 5 when a girl - 18 by the look of her- yelled at me.
"Just because we're one of the lowest districts doesn't mean you get to take more people for your stupid war. Why not take more from the upper districts, they're healthier and are actually trained for war since birth.", she screamed, and then everyone found something to throw at me. "Do you want a civil war? 'Cause that's what you're asking for." the girl yelled.
POV: Scarlet Menace
I didn't think I would ever stand up to the king like that, and though everyone says it was the right thing I knew there would be a bad outcome from that. I would kill to keep my family safe, no one would ever second guess my intentions - no one except the king.
"Hey, Scarlet, wait up," called Sam, one of the rebel leaders, just like me. I come to a stop to let him catch up to me.
"I'm leaving at sunrise," I tell him - the only person I can confide in, "I need to go to protect our people, plus if I could sneak my way onto a government position then I could help the rebels more."
"Let me go with you," he pleads, "let me be the one you confide every second in the palace to." His eyes are starting to water with tears, as if me leaving him here would cause lifelong problems.
I run a marathon of memories through my head, sticking to the one my Ma had told me that she said her mother had told her.
~The room is dark, but Ma's eyes are brighter than the sun. "What happens when the king dies and leaves us here with nothing - no country, no people, not even a crumb of food?" I ask her.
"Only the rebels will stand at that point," she says, "and when the time comes, they will choose the one most loyal to them to rule."
"Does their loyalty ever waver?" I ask, my voice filled with wonder.
She looks from side to side just to make sure we were alone, "Never doubt, our bloodline was always meant to serve, you should do the same now." she commands.~
"Stay," I reply, "protect them from here, I'll do the best I can without giving it away." With that, he turns around and goes back to the village.
"Name?" the guard demands as I and my horse and I come to a halt in front of the gates.
"The king has requested I be removed from my village and into his palace to be put on a special watch." I reply with a voice cold as ice, he probably did.
"What do we have here?", the king says as he enters the room, "Seems like you came to me yourself. What shall I do with you?"
"Take me, keep me, don't give the people of District 5 a martyr," I start listing, "I could easily tamp down the civil war that started this morning."
The king raises an eyebrow before asking, "How do you know about that?"
"I know how my fellow rebel leaders act. They are no peacemakers, in fact, they are quite the opposite."
"What I do know though is that I don't want a rebel leader in my court..." he trails off before continuing, "If you want a spot on my court then you need to prove yourself."
"And what do I need to do to prove myself?" I ask, ignoring the fact that it will probably be a dangerous task.
"You have to tamp down the civil war that has arisen in District 3."
My eyes brighten. More rebels? Maybe they could help the District 5 rebels! That's when I remember the first rule we were taught as new rebels, District 5 shall be the only district with rebels, the rest shall remain the same.
"That'll be easy," I say with a wicked grin.
"I'm only going up there if you come with me," I tell the king defiantly, but mostly because I'm afraid of being onstage, alone.
"Is that all?" he asks.
"I need you to put your arm around me."
He raises his eyebrows at that statement, "And why would you need that from Andrew III?" he questions.
"Please," I beg him, "that's all I require."
Andrew seems to consider it before saying, "All right. I mean, what bad could come from this?"
POV: King Andrew Van Dune III
The only thing bad that could happen would be his wife hating him forever. "Nothing," Scarlet says, then she murmurs, "except for everything."
"How many sons do you have?" Scarlet asks as we walk to our spot on the stage.
"Four," I reply, "the eldest is 19, the second oldest is 15, the second youngest is 12, and the youngest one is three years old."
"How old are you?" I ask as an afterthought.
"I'm turning 18 in two days," she says, so I was right.
The curtains open to let us see the angry, confused, spoiled, people of District 3. That's when I realize that my arm was already around Scarlet's hip which confused me, as I don't remember putting it there. "Come on," I whisper under my breath as I direct her to the couch that is normally reserved for me, and me only.
"I see there is someone here that you are, obviously, very close with, Your Majesty." Luke Athen (the interviewer) says.
"Actually, I just met her yesterday," I say before turning towards Scarlet, "the first time I ever talked to her was when she turned herself in at the palace for what she did." She turns into a light shade of pink as I motion for them to show the recording of what happened.
