Something extremely random... idk anymore lol

She stared at the explosions of light, shooting from the ship, that cast bright colors across the sky. It was mesmerizing. A she tread water with her tail, and her arms she couldn't help but wonder if her dad was wrong. Surely humans couldn't be that bad if they could create something as beautiful as.. ah what was the word? That's right, fireworks.

She smiled and ducked under the waves, flicking her tail and swimming closer to the ship. She apprehensively raised her eyes above water, so that she was mostly hidden in the waves, and watched the people  on board move about and continue to shoot more light into the sky. There was a lot of cheering and laughing coming from the ship. It filled her with a sense of longing to be able to join them.

She swam about the boat a bit, and almost laughed when she saw the figurehead at the front end fo the ship carved into a likeness of a mermaid. Her dad said humans didn't know they existed, but she had seen a few ships with carvings like this one. They were a myth to them, her sisters told her.

It was funny to her, but at the same time, and it wasn't the same, but she knew cars weren't a real thing, they were just a myth as well. She stifled a snort as she thought about what a funny sight it would be, people climbing in these structures of metal that roar and trusting their life to them. She just shook her head and continued to swim around the ship, observing the people celebrate together and dance.

She wished she could join them...

She swims to the other side of the ship where she catches sight of a man, just a young man really, looking around her age, leaning against the side of the ship, away from the others. His face was cast in shadow and somber, She couldn't help but notice that he was handsome, in a. rough kind of way, and she tilted her head wondering why, when he could be joining the others and having fun, he was by himself. Curiosity warred against caution and she swam a bit closer to the ship, closer than she'd ever gone to one before. She reached out and touched the side of the ship, its surface smooth against her palm. She gazed up at the young man again, watching him.

She ducked under the waves, startled when he suddenly left the railing glanced down, and then casually walked away and out of her line of sight. She sighed and spied a small ledge jutting out of the water and went over rested an arm on it, so that she didn't have to keep treading water. She continued to watch the party and didn't even hear when the window above her started being carefully, silently, slowly, opened.

Her head was resting on her arm when a voice spoke above her. "Hey". She glanced up, her eyes wide with fear when she saw the young man looking out the window and staring down at her, her heart raced ad shot through with fear and she couldn't move. Just stared at him, no one had ever caught sight of her before, much less spoken to her!?! He dad would be furious when he found out, she would be a disgrace to her people, her sisters would look on her with sham-

Her rambling, racing thoughts were interrupted when the young man spoke again. "I didn't mean to scare you, please don't leave." His eyes held curiosity and wonder, and she couldn't see any malicious intent, so against all that she'd been taught as she regained her composure and could move again, fear slowly leaving her veins, she didn't immediately duck under the waves and swim away.

Instead she looked up at him and said, "What do they call you?".

He looks startled for a moment and then, "I'm Vincent, and you?".

"Ariya, why are you not partying with the others."

He shrugs, a little grin on his lips, "Just not my scene, I prefer to be alone sometimes."

"Don't we all", she says with a wry grin and he laughs. The sound causes a warm feeling to spread through her chest and finds herself to stay and talk.

Ignoring the fact that he's a human and she a mermaid, they have as normal a conversation as one in their situation might have and both leave feeling less lonely than they have in a while.

He promised not to tell anyone about her and she left promising she would see him again one day.

In her head she knew it was promise she must never fulfill.

But in her heart she knew she would.
