The cold sensation by my side jolted me awake, and I opened my eyes to find myself in an unfamiliar place. Empty, desolate, and shrouded in a warm, golden fog. A strange sense of disorientation washed over me as I sat up, rubbing my eyes in disbelief.
"What the hell?" I muttered aloud, scanning the surroundings. There was no sign of civilization, no buildings, no cars, just endless fields stretching out as far as I could see. The fog swirled around me, casting long, ethereal shadows that danced and twisted eerily in the soft glow.
A sudden chill ran down my spine, and I realized I was alone in this forsaken place. Panic began to set in, but I forced myself to stay calm. I needed to figure out where I was and how I got here.
The pulsating ache in my skull was unbearable. It felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to my brain. Grasping my head tightly, I tried to steady my breathing, doing my best to ignore the excruciating pain.
My mind raced as I tried to recall the events leading up to this moment. The last thing I could remember was making my way home from work, the familiar routine of my daily life interrupted by some vague memory of... What? An accident? No, I couldn't remember. All I knew was that I was now lost in this eerie, fog-shrouded landscape, alone and in agony.
Despair crept in, threatening to consume me. But I refused to give in. Instead, I summoned every ounce of determination I possessed and resolved to survive. One step at a time, I told myself. Just one step at a time.
As I checked my attire, I noticed that I was indeed wearing my usual outfit from the day before. Everything seemed oddly normal except for the fact that my belongings—my wallet, phone, even my keys—were missing. This realization sent a wave of panic coursing through me, causing my heart to pound wildly against my rib cage.
The thought of death crossed my mind. Had I been in an accident? Was this some kind of afterlife? I shook my head, trying to dispel such morbid notions. Yet, the question lingered in my mind, gnawing at me like a persistent itch.
Just then, a voice cut through the silence, sending another shockwave of surprise rippling through my already frazzled nerves. "0021, finally, you're awake!" the voice boomed, echoing strangely throughout the foggy expanse.
I shot up from my standing spot, startled by the sudden intrusion. My heart pounded in my chest as I sought where was the source of the voice.
"Don't be surprised by such a generic setup. Now please confirm this, you are Cedric, right? Cedric Lexi Venix?" The voice demanded, echoing ominously in the quiet room.
"Who are you?!" I retorted, my patience wearing thin. "Answer me!"
At my response, the voice laughed, a chilling sound that reverberated through the empty space. "Can you stop it? I don't even know what's going on!!" I exclaimed, frustration seeping into my words.
"I'm simply a heavenly voice to make the story easier to understand," the voice explained, seemingly unbothered by my growing irritation.
"Heavenly voice?! I don't even know what the hell is going on!" Reaching my last limit, I screamed, my hands balled into fists at my sides.
The voice continued, its tone dripping with sarcasm. "I'd like to make a quick recap if I may. You are dead."
As the voice confirmed my worst fear, I found myself struggling to process the information. Even though I had considered the possibility, hearing it spoken so bluntly was still shocking.
"Can I know how I died?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Sadness hung heavy in the air, mingling with the thick fog surrounding us.
"Well, I quite understand that you're upset with your death, and it came rather suddenly, I might add," the voice responded, a hint of sympathy in its otherwise detached tone. "Let me show you."
