Aurora woke up feeling better than she had in a long time. Today, she was going home. She threw on a plain top, plaid skirt, chunky combat boots, and a baggy leather jacket that belonged to Damon. Skipping down the hallway, she was surprised to find Kai in the kitchen making pancakes.

Frowning in confusion, she took a seat on one of the stools surrounding the kitchen island. Kai had some sort of '80s pop music blaring. Aurora leaned over the table and turned the stereo dial down. "You're so weird," she said.

"Hey, what do you think you're doing? This is When in Rome's greatest hits," he mumbled through a mouthful of pancakes, reaching over to turn the music back up.

"When in what?" Aurora replied, still confused.

"Only one of the best and most underrated bands of all time. Put some respect on the name," Kai insisted, placing a stack of pancakes in front of her, she looked at it cautiously, noticing he had drawn a smiley face on the top with cream and blueberries.

"What's in this? Poison?" she asked sarcastically, her eyebrow raised.

"Eat it, don't eat it. I don't care. We have a big day ahead of us," Kai shrugged nonchalantly.

Aurora hesitated but then began to eat the pancakes. "Yeah, about today, do you know the spell that opens the Ascendant?" she asked between bites.

"Of course, I do," Kai mumbled, not turning to face her.

Aurora raised an eyebrow, studying him for a moment. "You sure? Because if you mess this up, we might be stuck here forever."

Kai finally turned to face her, a smirk playing on his lips. "Relax. I know what I'm doing. I've been preparing for this moment for a long time.

"Aurora wasn't convinced. "What is it then? The spell."

Kai laughed, a hint of irritation creeping into his voice. "I'll tell you when we get there."

Aurora wanted to trust him. Why would he go through all this—telling her about the Ascendant and the Gemini Coven—if he didn't know the spell? She took a deep breath, deciding to give him the benefit of the doubt for now. She was sure he would reveal it when they got to the ritual location.

"Alright," she said, finishing her pancakes. She looked him up and down judgementally. "Can I help you?" He asked. "What's that?" She asked nodding towards the small object on the counter. Kai picks it up, and admires it proudly, "This is my pager."

"Oh, I always forget I'm in 1994. Well, in the future, only doctors really use pagers. We have cellphones now," Aurora said with a smile. "So you might want to get rid of that before we go home—it's kinda lame. I'll get you a cellphone instead-"

Kai interrupted, "555-Hiya-Kai. I am never giving up these digits."

"Fine, keep your pager, loser," Aurora quipped, a playful smirk tugging at her lips.

They left the kitchen, the sound of their footsteps echoing in the hallway. The morning sun streamed through the windows, casting long shadows on the floor. Aurora couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in her stomach. She hoped she was making the right decision by trusting Kai.

It felt like they had been walking for hours. Kai held the Ascendant as if its energy was guiding him. Aurora's legs were aching, and she was starting to lose patience.

"Are we there yet?" Aurora pleaded, her voice tinged with frustration.

"Almost," Kai responded, not breaking his stride.
