Start of the Remote Age: When contact with both the Ark and the Nemesis is lost, both sides of the Great War go into disarray. The Autobot Commonwealth attempts to determine the fate of the Ark and the fate of Optimus Prime and the rest of Team Prime, but their efforts are in vain. Eventually, Ultra Magnus is named acting Supreme Commander of the Commonwealth in Prime's absence and succeeds in maintaining the fragile alliance between the colony worlds with Elita-One and Sentinel Major as his advisors. By contrast, Megatron's apparent demise leaves Gelgastorm struggling to control the Decepticon Star Empire in his brother's stead as several Decepticon warlords, mercenary groups, and pirate crews turn on each other for their own respective dreams of conquest.

Shockwave reacts to Megatron's disappearance with trademark stoicism, taking the opportunity presented to further his own plans for Cybertron's future. He withdraws to his powerbase in the ruins of Crystal City and begins his work.
