25 May
The date was scratched out with a bright yellow circle around it. Speckles of dirt surrounded the circle but nothing could stop the numbers from standing out like the great meaning it had from the start.
Yoongi stared at the date with his breath held before he reached out and gently pressed his finger on the number releasing a shaky sigh. The soft touch of the paper felt like it was cutting into his skin even if it was smooth paper but it held so much more meaning than it should hold. He knew the day would come one day but his eyes grew blurry from the wetness starting to form as he took in a deep breath before letting his hand fall to hang loosely next to him.
He had waited longer than he was supposed to but he tried his best to keep hope alive and to hope by pushing the date back more and more that the universe would send them back. Even if they were injured or sick he wouldn't care as long as they were with him and alive then he would have been overjoyed but unfortunately he had a whole year to accept the hope was there for no reason at all.
They wouldn't have left him alone so long and he needed to accept the fact that he was the only one holding onto their memory. He held on for so long and tried so hard to engrave their memory and presence into the ship by putting up their pictures, making their rooms ready for when they return, saving food for them when they come back, writing small notes which he wrote to then every single day and by making them videos just in case they wanted to see what they missed or when he missed them too much and just wanted to tell them how much he missed them.
He tried so long but it was time to let go. Yoongi bit down on the inside of his cheek as he took a few steps back to turn to the picture he put up next to the calender and he smiled at it with a small laugh escaped his lips.
"It's been 2 years since we took this photo. Just the seven of us, my favourite photo. time for me to join you guys. You are probably scolding me for taking so long but I never broke my promise to you. I miss you guys....it's been too long" He whispered under his breath as he traced the faces in the picture.
Bright smiles with eyes closed from the laughter from a few faces and he couldn't stop the tears falling as his heart ached at the sight. He missed his brothers so much that there was nothing worse than losing them but not even knowing when he truly lost them or if he ever did.
He traced the faces with his eyes going by to memorize the faces once more before he needed to leave the room for the last time. It was such a warm picture with Jungkook laughing with his whole body leaning against Jimin who was almost falling off the couch and Namjoon having his arms thrown around Yoongi's shoulder as well as Hoseok's. Jin held up a peace sign as he almost sat on Taehyung who had his eyes closed from laughing so hard and his smile bright and big.
It was their family picture before they all needed to leave Yoongi but they were ready to take the picture and have one last day of just hanging out with each other letting work rest for the day. They had left that night but it was a great memory and somehow it felt like the calm before the storm even if none if them knew they wouldn't ever return home.
Those were his best friends who became his family and became his everything the day they were the only people to survive the explosions. They had gone out on their part of the ship that could detach and form it's own smaller ship only meant for travel and they went to search if there were any survived spaceships around that had oxygen tanks or fuel since they knew they would run out one day. Yoongi had to stay behind that day to take care of the ship and they all parted with warm hugs and promises to stay safe and that they would be back soon.
There was a small amount of communication they had available and Yoongi still remembered that day like it was yesterday when he sat in the front of the ship with the small device in his hands hearing their voices come through and their silly banter. He smiled so hard as he tucked his feet under the blanket he had with him but it all changed in a matter of seconds. The endless laughter got interrupted by loud beeping and panicked voices going over each over. Till this day Yoongi didn't know what went wrong or if they even knew what went wrong or if it was inevitable but the one part Yoongi remembered was Seokjin's voice coming through sounding staticky and teary.
