Chapter 21
Cheng Meiling resolved the conflict between the children and hurried to the next stop.
Today is not only the day for the children to go to school, but also the day for her to report to the cafeteria.
She had already put it off for a long time, and she would feel embarrassed if she didn't go.
The canteen was only five minutes away from the family compound, but Cheng Meiling had been taking care of her three children in the morning, so by the time she arrived at the kitchen, it was already past nine o'clock.
The kitchen was filled with smoke, and it was obvious that they had already started cooking lunch.
"Who are you looking for?" A bearded man with a coarse cloth tied around his head and a clean apron looked up at Cheng Meiling.
"I was introduced to this job by the quartermaster. I used to be an apprentice in a state-owned restaurant." Cheng Meiling revealed her identity.
The man looked her up and down, his eyes finally fell on the calluses on her fingertips, and he nodded.
"There's a basket of radishes over there. Show me how you shred them."
Cheng Meiling looked in the direction of his finger and saw a basket of fresh radishes that had just been pulled out of the ground and still had dirt on them.
When Cheng Meiling turned around to ask about the water and knives in the kitchen, the man had already pulled back the curtain and left. The people around him were busy with their own things and no one answered her.
Cheng Meiling was helpless. The basket was quite heavy and she couldn't move it by herself. Fortunately, there was a pool of water nearby.
She carried it several times and started sweating.
She wiped the sweat from her forehead and put the muddy radishes into the pool one by one.
"Wait, this is not the place to wash vegetables." A slightly plump man who was rarely seen in this era stopped her.
"This is where the kitchen water is. What should we do if you make this place so dirty by washing radishes? Go to the well outside to wash them."
Cheng Meiling gritted her teeth and said, "I just asked about the kitchen water problem. Why didn't you tell me? Why did you wait until I moved here to tell me?"
The little fat man bared his teeth and said with a smile: "You didn't ask me, you asked the bearded man, but he ignored you."
Cheng Meiling glared at him and slowly dragged a basket of radishes out.
She had seen a lot of such difficulties. In the past, many people looked down on her for wanting to be a chef as a woman, so they used more tricky methods, but she still managed to get through it.
"Fat San, please don't make things difficult for the little girl. Just let her wash in this sink. I'm usually busy and can't tell the difference so clearly."
Fatty sucked his teeth and said, "She came so late to report, what's wrong with me giving her a hard time?"
"You don't know that he was almost killed by a piece of wood while performing a show. He finally managed to save his life. It's understandable that he needs to rest for a few days."
After hearing this, Fatty Three stiffened his neck and said unconvincedly: "What's the point of being a chef? We just need to do our best to cook this bowl of rice. Do you understand?"
"Tsk, you fat bastard are ugly, but you don't allow others to stand out."
After saying this, a group of people burst into laughter.
