I couldn't sleep. The thought of him kept me up last night. I wondered what he was going to do. Would he stay in New York? All these thoughts were running through my head, and them being there was causing me to not get any sleep. I sat up, knowing that I wasn't going to fall asleep, and checked my phone. It was 2:00am. I was still worried about him. I sighed, putting my phone on my nightstand. I tried to go to sleep again, but no luck. Then, I got a text from him saying to look outside my window. I did as he instructed for me to do. I looked outside and saw him standing on the sidewalk in front of my apartment building.
"What are you doing here at 2:00 in the morning?!" I yelled down to him trying to be quite so my parents wouldn't wake.
"What are you doing awake?" He yelled back at me.
"Just get in here!" I said to him.
He climbed the fire escape on my tall apartment building. I was on the third floor, so he didn't have to climb that high. He was used to climbing to get to my window. He almost did it everyday. After school, he would come over to hang out, until my parents were home. Then he would climb back out the window and leave without being seen. Once he reached my window, I climbed out and stood on the fire escape next to him.
"Are you staying in New York?" I asked curiously. He sat on the fire escape and I did the same. I hoped that he would say yes and we could still see each other like we did after school.
"Listen-" he began. "I promise that one day I'll be around to keep you safe and sound. But I can't stay here." He said side hugging me.
"Please don't go!" I begged shedding a tear. I held him tight, not wanting to let go.
"I know there are some things we need to talk about."
"When are you leaving?"
"Tonight." He said looking down at his feet.
"So soon?" I said whinning.
"Just let me hold you a little bit longer." He said side hugging me tight.
We stared out into the sky for a few moments.
"When you fall asleep tonight, remember that we lay under the same stars." He said looking at them in the sky.
I kept quiet. I was looking at all of the stars in the sky near the moon. Still I held him close.
"Where are you going?" I asked hoping it wasn't far from New York.
"I don't know. But I have to go now." He said standing up.
"Will I ever see you again?" I asked getting up.
"I don't know." He said shedding a tear. "You can't tell anyone you saw me leaving."
"Ok." I said in a small voice.
"Goodbye, Ally!" He said climbing down my fire escape for the last time.
"Goodbye, Josh." I said crying softly.
He walked down the road with his head looking down at the pavement. I watched him walk until I could see him no longer. Then I climbed back into my bed and tried to sleep.
