GRAYSON
Today was Zoey's baby shower and here I was missing it. I was not happy to miss something I knew was so important to her. Instead, I was still tied up to a chair with a busted lip and some bruised ribs. Jack, Aaron, and Hunter had the same. Jared picked one of us, but we couldn't fight back. If Jared were a real man, he'd let us after him without drugs in our system or rope binding our hands and feet down.
Jared pissed me off, and so did Ivy. I was missing my child's baby shower. I am supposed to be there next to my wife. I want to soak up every moment I can have.
We'd been left alone in this basement for an hour now, leaving me plenty of time to mess with the ropes tied around my wrists, cutting off my circulation.
"Did you get it yet? I haven't got mine," Hunter said.
I shook my head. "No, I haven't got it. It's not exactly easy to get a rope undone with one hand. I've done it before, but it's been a while."
"I got it," Jack mumbled. He began using his free hand to undo the other, then proceeded to untie his feet and help us.
Jack Brighton was one of the new members of my crew, and the kid was smart. Jack was a couple of months shy of twenty-two and did great with the training we had provided. Right now, it is paying off great.
"I'm damn sure glad I hired you," I said, standing from the chair once Jack got the ropes off.
Jack grinned. "Happy to be of service. Now, how the hell are we getting out of here?"
I glanced around the basement and saw a window. "Right, there is our only option unless we want to go upstairs and face those psychos."
Jack and the rest of us made our way to the window. It was tall, even for us men, who all stood around six feet. It was my crew, and I offered them to come onto this job, so I helped Aaron and Hunter out first. Jack was refusing.
"Grayson, I'm not leaving you in here. What if they come down here in a few seconds?" Jack asked.
"They already are, and I can hear their footsteps. That's why you need to get out Jack. I will make it out of here, trust me."
"Grayson, consider your wife and child. I have no such ties. It's why I take on this job."
I sighed and shook my head. "Get out the window now, or you're fired."
Jack's frustration was palpable, yet abandoning him was out of the question. Despite our seven-year age difference, I was acutely aware that he had an entire life ahead of him.
"Hey! What the hell are you doing?!"
I hurriedly shoved Jack out the window and slammed it shut. He didn't run he just stared at me. "Run and go get help!"
Something whacked me on the head, knocking me to the ground, and I began to see spots, but I wasn't finished yet. I stumbled but made it back onto my feet and stood before Jared.
"You lied about her whereabouts. I had someone go check out the place. There is no Wendy or Lana that lives there. My guy almost got arrested for trying to find her there."
I shrugged. "Well, maybe if you weren't an asshole and didn't abuse women and treat your men to do the same thing, that wouldn't have happened. Moron."
"Excuse me?"
I chuckled. "You heard me. You think I'm scared of you? I've dealt with plenty of people, all of them like you. Jared, you are no different than the rest, and it's quite sad that you can't develop your own techniques."
