I woke up to the soft glow of the morning sun filtering through my bedroom window. Stretching and yawning, I could hear the faint sounds of breakfast being prepared downstairs. I glanced over at Evelyn, who was still fast asleep, her brown hair splayed across the pillow. I smiled to myself, knowing it wouldn't be long before she was awake and ready to tackle the day with her usual energy.I quietly got out of bed and slipped into my favorite pair of jeans and a comfortable t-shirt. After a quick glance in the mirror to tame my blonde hair, I headed downstairs. The smell of fresh pancakes greeted me, and I felt my stomach growl in anticipation. As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I saw my mother flipping pancakes at the stove, her face glowing with the warmth of the kitchen. My father was already seated at the table, reading the morning newspaper, while Danny, my seventeen-year-old brother, was helping our nine-year-old brother, Oliver, pour syrup onto his pancakes. "Good morning, everyone," I said cheerfully as I took my seat at the table. "Morning, Daph," Danny replied with a grin. Oliver waved at me enthusiastically, his green eyes sparkling with excitement."Good morning, sweetheart," my mother said, turning to give me a warm smile. "Did you sleep well?"Like a rock," I said, reaching for a pancake. "What's the plan for today?" Before anyone could answer, I heard the familiar sound of footsteps on the stairs. Evelyn appeared in the doorway, looking as radiant as ever despite having just woken up. She took her seat next to me, and we exchanged a knowing look. Breakfast time was always our favourite part of the day. As we started eating, Danny cleared his throat, drawing our attention. "So, I have some news," he began, looking around the table. "My friend Milo is starting work on the farm today."I felt a flutter of excitement at the mention of Milo's name. I'd heard so much about him from Danny, and I was curious to finally meet him in person. Evelyn raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Milo? The guy you've been friends with forever?" Evelyn asked, her tone light and teasing. "Yeah, that's the one," Danny said with a laugh. "He's a good guy, and I think he'll be a great help around here." My father looked up from his newspaper, nodding approvingly. "That's good to hear. We can always use an extra pair of hands."Well, I'm looking forward to meeting him," I said, glancing at Evelyn. She gave me a small smile. "Yeah," Danny replied. "He's really good with the animals and great with photography. I think he'll fit in perfectly."Oliver, who had been quietly eating his pancakes, perked up. "Is Milo the one who takes those cool pictures you showed me, Danny?"Yep, that's him," Danny said with a nod. "Maybe he can teach you some tricks with your camera, Ollie."
Breakfast continued with the usual banter and laughter that filled their mornings. Daphne felt a mix of anticipation and curiosity about meeting Milo. She wondered what he was like and how he would fit into their tight-knit family dynamic.
As they finished eating and started clearing the table, Daphne caught Evelyn's eye. "What do you think about Milo starting here?" Evelyn shrugged, a playful glint in her eye. "I guess we'll find out soon enough. Should be interesting, don't you think?" Daphne smiled, feeling a surge of excitement. "Yeah, definitely interesting."I said as I headed to the sink to help my mother wash up."Hey, daph," Evelyn said as I turned to look at her. " Race you to the big barn." She said as she started to run for the front door "hey what that's so not fair, " I said as I ran towards her, trying to catch up.
