My eyes open and I see the true carnage that followed the bomb. I turn my head, slowly, to look at the wheat fields. There is no wheat. I find myself standing up with no clear indication of why. As if by a gravitational force, j find myself being pulled towards the small mound on the edge of the field. I kneel.
Father. I feel tears brimming and turn away as they plummet towards the ground. Next to him, the simplest thing. The most sacred one of our family. It boggles my mind on how it managed to survive the blast, but I'm unimaginably happy to see it. I pick up the cylinder and bury my face in it. Still as fresh as when pappy had it. I scan the perimeter and see the tiniest of figures on the horizon. Is it...? Not knowing what lies before me, I go into a dead sprint. There's nothing to trip over but mangled skulls and the ashes of neighbors. I pity them. Their existence was always the least appealing. I stop to kick a pile in disdain before closing in on my target. I tackle Pete as he has his back to me. He panicked, but, upon seeing me, instantly gave me a warm welcome. He looks me up and down.
"Tony." It's still amazing to hear my name in his golden tones. He sees the round shape in my pocket and picks it out. Once he sees the meat, his eyes light up. We both know there hasn't been a pig in this place since before i was born. "Hey, tony, where'd u get this fresh pepperoni"
