"Suzuka is one of his favorite tracks, so I'm a bit worried about him."
~•~
It was Saturday, which meant that most of the people Alira worked with had the day off – for the most part. Unless something happened or they were short-staffed, they were supposed to have the day off.
Alira didn't take the day off. She had an agreement with the zoo director that if she worked on weekends, she would get paid, but only fifty percent of her usual salary. She accepted because she would have done it for free anyway, so if she got paid for it, even if it was just a little, it was still good. She loved animals so much that she was willing to work for them without getting paid at all.
Usually, she only worked two or three hours on weekends. She never spent the whole day there because weekends were the only days she could spend with her dog, whom she otherwise neglected and everyone else had to take care of.
Today, however, she went to work. She needed to clear her head because it was full of thoughts about Daniel Ricciardo and his week at work. Besides the trip to the city, she hadn't seen him smile. He always looked sour and like he didn't want to be there. This bothered Alira and ruined her workdays, so she wanted to spend at least a few hours without his grumpy face. A few hours with smiling colleagues who enjoyed their work and didn't do it as a punishment.
She was at her lemur enclosure because she wasn't needed elsewhere. On weekends, they mostly finished technical work that didn't get done during the weekdays since their zoo always had a rush of elementary schools coming for trips on weekdays. On weekends, they only had families with children, so they didn't need a staff member to guide groups and talk to them – their zoo only offered that for schools and kindergartens.
She felt a bit sorry for leaving her dog alone again, but that was the fate of a zookeeper. She didn't have as much free time as other people she saw on the street when she went for walks in the city. Fortunately, she had a house with a large garden, so her white furry cannonball had a place to run around. She also had cameras in the living room, kitchen, and garden, so she could see what he was doing from her phone – luckily, he was well-behaved and never destroyed anything in the house.
However, her workday ended sooner than it started. She had decided to come in at three o'clock because she needed to go to the city center in the morning to take care of something in a store – and mainly needed to buy food for her dog because everything she bought last time was already gone. Daniel would definitely laugh at her Jeep again, but she loved this car and was glad she got it as a company car. The other colleagues had normal pickups or, for those with families, even SUVs. Alira was the only one who got a Jeep. And maybe, just maybe, she asked for it herself, but just maybe.
So why did her workday end before it began? Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a penguin start swaying from side to side. No keeper was nearby, so she did what she had to do. She ran out of the lemur enclosure, literally jumped over the glass barrier into the penguin enclosure, and caught the poor guy before he fell to the ground. The people who witnessed it started clapping, and the little kids looked at her like a superhero because that's what she seemed like to them after they saw her jump over the one and a half meter high glass barrier.
