Unhappy endings

Everything around me was engulfed in silence. The lake was still, barely visible due to the unusually dark night. The moon was nowhere to be found and the stars were hidden behind a cluster of dark clouds. There was something eerie about the silence of the night and I couldn't help the shiver that ran down my spine.

A twig snapping behind me broke me out of my disturbing thoughts and I whirled around to see Sin coming out of the bushes that encircled the lake. He was donned in his usual black attire, making it even harder to see him. I swallowed the sudden sense of foreboding that came over me and waited until my boyfriend was right in front of me to speak but he beat me to it.

"I was surprised to see your text. I thought you were avoiding me." Now that he was mere inches away from me, I could see his smirk and the glint in his eyes.

"I needed to talk to you." My words were clipped and my tone was cold, but his smirk only widened in response.

"So I have gathered." He took a step closer to me. "So talk."

"What happened between you and Caelum?" Upon hearing my question, the smirk on Sin's lips vanished and a dark look took over his features. His fists clenched by his sides and he ground his teeth so hard I thought he was going to break them.

“Him again,” Sin said between gritted teeth. “It always comes back to him, doesn't it?”

“He's my friend! I want to know why you hate him so much you're willing to pick a fight with me every time you see him around.”

“I'm your boyfriend! Why do you keep picking him over me?”

I took a deep breath, pushing back the flare of anger that rose through me. “I'm not picking him over you, he is helping me with my powers. We come from the same kingdom, remember? He's been very helpful, Sin. Something you would know if you bothered to check up on my progress at all.”

“Lixierra is full of Umbra Mystics, you could have asked anyone else for help.” He took a step forward, his eyes swirling with rage. “But instead you threw yourself at him and those other bitches you call friends.”

The fear that occupied my body up until this point disappeared into thin air, replaced by all-consuming anger. Fire replaced the blood in my veins and I could tell that Sin noticed my change in demeanor by the brief look of shock that flitted through his eyes.

"If I were you, I'd be very careful how you address my friends in my presence." My voice was low and threatening. "I came here to hear your side of the story; I suggest you tell it without insulting the people I care about."

He took a deep breath and ran a hand through his raven locks, taking a step back from me in the process. “He took something from me.”

I narrowed my eyes. “What did he take?”

“Something important.”

“For heavens’ sake, Sin.” I massaged my temples, the beginning of a headache already throbbing between my eyes. “Can you stop being so cryptic and just spit it out already?”

His eyes darkened even further and the glare he gave me would have made me run for the hills. But I wasn't running today. He had answers I needed, and unlike Kira, he didn't seem to be lost in his own mind. Anger aside, Sin looked sharp, present, lacking the foggy look I had been noticing on my friends these  past couple of weeks.

What could have Caelum possibly taken from him that made him so vindictive?

"It doesn't matter anymore.”

"It does if you’re still holding on to this pathetic grudge." I matched his glare with one of my own. "I tried to stay out of it, to be neutral and respect your past, but it's getting out of hand now. You're at his throat every chance you get, you're picking fights with me for hanging out with him, you're talking shit about my friends. What has gotten into you?”
