She had been accepted . She had actually been accepted to her dream secondary school. Kai blinked back tears . She had gotten in. She had been accepted into Crestwood Private. Not just accepted to add, Kai got in on full scholarship. Her parents were joyous when the letter arrived that morning, their hard work with her and studying had payed off. They did spare time to tell every friend of theirs , their daughter had got in of course. Her parents had now settled into their rooms as she read over the letter still.

The window open letting fresh air in, flowing the white curtains, the setting sun, with its red, orange and yellow hues like the drawings she drew as a kid visible through the wide windows. It set the mood for the wondrous news. Kai gripped the letter tightly as her hands quivered, she felt as if she could cry. She re-read the letter over and over again, she chuckled realising it was really true and her hard work had payed off. Kai moved books and rubbish on her desk aside making room to view the letter again.

Her room was exceptionally messy, coke cans under her bed, books littered across her desk with several sheets of paper, pencils scattered, pencil clippings to the side. The dim LED lights glowed a bright sky blue, illuminating the room. Kai hadn't gotten a second to breathe or to even consider cleaning her room when she was studying for her scholarship exams, the same exams which would dictate whether she would please her parents and herself or not. Since the exam finished, she had incurring dreams flooded with her fear of not getting accepted or getting a scholarship. Kai often awoke in cold sweat with tears streaming. That had all diminished as she had for the news for her acceptance into the school.

Kai sat spinning in her white chair, holding the letter tightly, now her thoughts drifted to what her new school could be like. What people she'll meet. How she'll forget everything happened in primary and the years prior. Kai eventually glanced around her room, taking in the mess and rubbish. She sighed, cleaning was the bane of her existence, she absolutely hated doing it but once she began , she almost couldn't stop until everything was perfectly neat. Kai nearly tucked the letter in a drawer, before standing up to see the extent of the mess before beginning to tidy.
She glanced around once, before inhaling sharply, preparing to start. Kai eyed the cans once more , before flopping down on her bed , defeated.
"I'll deal with that tomorrow" Kai grumbled to herself. She put aside her problem for later as usual. She reached for her phone which was in charging. 67%, pretty good for now. Her wallpaper was of her primary school friends , and their meet up at the park. The bright light of her phone illuminated the room much more than the Leds. She grumbled before turning down the brightness and volume before beginning to scroll, the sun was down at this point and the moon high up. Stars glistening in the sky back at her through the window. Kai's window remained open letting cool air in as she coughed.

Kai had been sick previously, from the last couple days, it had mostly gone away just a horrible wheezing cough remained. Kai heard footsteps recognising them to be her mom's as she slid her phone back onto her desk with its face down off, pretending to be asleep once again. It had become a habit to recognise footsteps in order to avoid getting in trouble, depending on the noise produced and pace, Kai could tell whether it was her dad or her mom. During the scholarship time, she had gotten barely a minute to scroll or check her phone for fun, so Kai used to pull late nights to not die of pure boredom, and fall behind on drama or texts so she scrolled much past her regulated bedtime. Kai soon heard the footsteps retreat to the bedroom.

Kai silently exhaled before waiting a few more moments, she was waiting to see whether her mom would come back or not. After a few minutes that felt seemingly like hours, Kai reached for her phone once again. She scrolled through her messages on WhatsApp, her eyes drawing to certain names, which she was relieved to leave back along with her past with them. Kai had WhatsApp as her only social media app, apart from YouTube which she used premium on her parents account. Kai was supposed to have her focus solely on studies and academics but she couldn't help it if her mind drifted to other places. To her, it wasn't fair at all that she wasn't permitted to download Snapchat or TikTok, but she would never admit such a thing out loud, knowing the lecture that would be given afterwards simply wasn't worth it.

Kai's mind often drifted to the concept of love, she often watched it through YouTube, the sweet relationships that people had with once another, to be cared for, to be complimented and cherished. The idea was foreign but something kai desired so much. No matter her desire for the same love, Kai was afraid. Afraid to be turned down or to love, knowing it could distract her from what was most important. Kai had a future to make and people to make proud, it would only stray her and could break her heart easily if the wrong person was chosen. It had happened before and each time even at a young age she promised to never love again only to break it.

This was another reason she was grateful she got accepted into Crestwood, it was farther from her primary school. Also, no one she knew was attending meaning she had a fresh start where could leave behind the embarrassments she went through each time Kai ventured to love. She felt she was a fool each time she was turned down to even consider it again.

Kai closed her eyes, wishing for the summer to come and end faster, to start anew.
