A beating heart is a divine occurrence. A combination of muscles and assorted memories the size of our fist which holds the power of keeping us from drifting away at any moment of our lives.
A loving heart is a sacred promise. A blood-pumping machine that once intertwined with another person's cardiac organ holds the gift of crying the quietest of whimpers or shouting the calmest of loves.
But a broken heart. Oh a broken heart is a disgrace. It represents sin, where muscles and memories no longer recognize each other and suddenly become strangers. It represents betrayal, when our divine oaths whispered in morning light no longer hold any value.
"I was thinking..." Sugawara breaks the comfortable silence whilst texting something in his phone, his free hand playing with Katsumi's rings and brown bag swaying over his right shoulder. "...want to order sushi tonight? One of my kids had this delicious-looking salmon sashimi over a bed of warm rice" Sugawara lets out an exasperated sigh and looks upwards the orange sky "God I was starving!"
Katsumi double checks that the two servings of spicy mapo tofu are still warm in her bag. The coach whistles at exactly 6PM and practice is promptly over. She looks up from the bag laying next to her on the gym floor and finds that warming smile walking towards her.
She stands up and opens her arms, not bothered by the obvious fact that Sugawara is sweating and exhausted from practice. They both meet in a quiet embrace by the entrance of Karasuno's gym.
"Hello you" He whispers into her forehead before planting a kiss on it. A sweet taste covers his lips, the taste of a devoted heart being welcomed by his adored shrine. "How did the train treat you?"
She smiles at the sound of his voice being so close to her ears and not coming from a phone on speaker "It was all right, finished all my homework so we can go watch that movie you've been talking about all week" Katsumi smiles at the sight of an excited Sugawara, how the mole underneath his left cheek hides in the folds of his smile.
"I'll tell the guys to clean quickly but we'd have to make a pit stop to eat something before. God I'm starving!" He whines, pulling Katsumi closer to his chest in an attempt to hide his childish demeanour and getting a glimpse of Katsumi's heartbeat.
Sutorimu's smile grows bigger, something she always finds herself being surprised at. Her smiles are always a beaming colour when they are for Koushi. "I have a surprise for you, look at my bag"
And he does, and he finds the two servings of his favourite dish in the world, and he thinks of marrying her in the future, and they innocently kiss at the gates of Karasuno's gym.
Katsumi looks at the train rails, empty space in front of her making her more anxious by the second. It takes her a couple of minutes to notice Sugawara's fingers playing with the rings on her right hand. Her heart twists in disgust.
Don't do this Katsumi.
He squeezes her hand, prompting a response from the other half of his heart. "Sumi? Are you here love?" He asks, placing a gentle hand on her cheek and making her look at him. He's worried she is overworking herself, trying to get that job at that one prestigious law firm that promises to give her everything she's been working for.
Katsumi snaps out of it promptly, looking over at the mesmerizing hazel-brown eyes staring deep into her soul, as if they can get anything else out of it after all these years. "Yes I'm here..." Truth is, it feels as if she left early this morning "...sorry I was just thinking"
Koushi puts his phone away and pledges all of his attention to Katsumi, trying to wrap his mind around whatever has Katsumi so quiet. "Have you heard anything back from the interview?" He asks, curious to know if those pretentious lawyers are thinking about declining Katsumi's curriculum. As if they can hire anyone better than the red head.
