We were all there, everyone was there, all the inhabitants of our little town of Chelton were there, all dressed in black, for the first time in a long time a horrible event had struck our peaceful little town. I've never liked this kind of gathering, but I had to be there, we all had to. It's a sad day for the Rings, as the body of their son, missing for 4 days, has been found under the cliff. John Rings was an impulsive young teenager, and everyone thought he'd come back, that it was just a tantrum against his father, but only two people thought anything had happened to him: his mother, Marie, who begged the police to open an investigation but it opens 48 hours after the mother's concern as the procedure states, and there was also my little brother, Oliver, John's best friend, who kept asking me to do something like contact my police friend, Asher McGuire. I just thought he was worried about his friend, but no, he was right. Right now, I could see the sadness in his eyes and hear the cries of the deceased's mother. The boy's body had just been laid to rest, and the last words of his father, Andrew, had just been spoken.
It was cold in the city cemetery, I should say as usual, but today the air smelled of decay, of despair. I was watching people leave when someone pulled me out of my thoughts.
- You can wait in the car with Mom, we'd like to be alone with Sam. says my little brother in a small voice.
- Yes, of course, take your time. I replied
I watched him drive off with Samantha Grey, his best friend, a beautiful blonde with hazel eyes. I'd always liked her, she was a good influence on Oliver and John, they were the inseparable trio, the power trio.
I glanced behind me to see my mother chatting with Madame Bridgette, our neighbor, a 55-year-old woman, the kind of woman who baked good cakes and always had a perfect garden, a beautiful lawn with a lovely apple tree... I was about to tell my mother when someone pulled me by the arm. It was Jess, my best friend and colleague at the bookshop.
- Emy, I haven't seen you all day," she said.
- Hi Jess, I've been busy with Oliver," I whispered.
- Oh, poor guy, how's he taking the news?" she said, "It must be awful to lose your best friend overnight.
- I know he's sad, but he won't talk to me about it, he hasn't said a word about John, we tell each other everything at the base, I'd like him to know I'm there for him.
- Don't worry, he's probably still in shock, having just seen his best friend buried. she says to reassure me.
- I think he's angry with me because I didn't believe him when he told me something must have happened to his friend. I feel like a fool, if I'd at least made a little effort, maybe it wouldn't have come to this.
- Stop talking nonsense, it's not your fault," she says. I'll leave you to it, I'm going to pay my respects to Rings.
I looked away to see Oliver, still standing by the grave talking to Sam. At least he's talking to someone, I thought to myself. Next to them was Delphine, John's 10-year-old sister, staring alone at her brother's grave. Her blue eyes were wide open, but so far she hadn't shed a tear, her gaze was empty, no emotion at all. Poor thing, still in shock, I thought. I was still in my own thoughts, until Andrew came in.
- Are you all right?
- I should be asking you that question," I replied, "and I'm sorry for your loss.
- Thanks Emy, in fact I should be thanking you for everything you did for him, he loved spending time with you, you've always looked after him since he was a child. he says
