(this tried to be a dystopian for two seconds before it became the lesbian version of American wife. ive never actually read american wife so thats just based of the discription.)

"What's for dinner? Dads asking" a nine year old girl, nicknamed kat, in the year 3050 said from the kitchen doorway

"Mac'n'cheese" she replied, stirring the pot.

"Okay" Kat ran downstairs to the basement, where her dad was working. "She said mac'n'cheese"

"Okay. Do you want to see what I'm working on?" he asked, rolling his wheelchair back. In Front of him were two planters on a desk, one was full of almost fully grown wheat while the other just had sprouts. They both had light lamps over them. Next to it on the other desk was an array of spray bottles and watering cans, as well as some notebooks an pens and oddly enough a hamster cage with a rat in it.

"I dont get why you do this. The government is out to get you yet you're trying to help them." kat really didn't get it, why does he want to solve problems for the people who made a million problems for him

"Do you know why there killing people"

"Because of the population crisis"

"And do you know why the population being too big is a crises"

"Because there isn't enough space?"

"Well, the housing crisis, so yes but no... there isn't enough food. If I can make something that grows more food, then we would have enough, and they would stop killing. Plus even if i die, then i'm doing it for you, so you can live in a better world" he turned back to the plants. "This one is with my current formula" he pointed towards the almost fully grown wheat "and this is without '' he pointed towards the sprouts.

"What's the rat for?" kat was a bit concerned

"To see if its safe to eat" he paused, then saw the worry on kat's face "don't worry he won't die, probably"

"Mhhh... okaaaay" he laughed at her response.

It all happened so quickly, one moment they were in the basement eating as a family, the next there were men with guns, arresting kats mother and father. One to be killed for the crime of "not being able to contribute" as if the work he did from his wheelchair wasnt contributing, the other for the crime of harboring and "wasting" resources on an "unnecessary" person. As she sat on the curb of her house, Kat cried, she bawled, yet nobody seemed to notice her until a social worker told her to get into a car, even then the social worker didn't console her. But people not paying attention to her was good, it meant she wasn't caught when she took her fathers notes and journals with her.

"Kat, are you sure?" Marie asked, she sat on now 17 year old kats bed, while Kat worked at her desk.

"Absolutely. What do you want me to do? Nothing?" she spun her chair around looking at her girlfriend with misdirected hate in her eyes.

"Why are you upset at me?"

"I'm not! You know that" she looked through her fathers notes, then her own. Slamming her head down on the table "i don't get it! Why did he write like this, i understand most of it but this is like he used his non-dominant hand!" kat picked up her head and sighed, handing the notebook to marie who looked over the messy words.

"Something about cells, i think"

"Wow real specific! This whole goddamn book is about cells, they're plants!'' Kat said sarcastically, a hateful grin on her face.
