On July 10, 1968, Theodore Bagwell was born. Bellick said that his sister, who has Down syndrome, was sexually raped by his father. Theodore was born as a result. Theodore's father instilled in him the habit of reading comprehensive encyclopedias and dictionaries during his early years, promising him a better life and the opportunity to become "President of the United States" eventually. This is how Theodore acquired his extensive vocabulary. Bagwell has spent his whole childhood in and out of jail, frequently for acts of vandalism and animal torture. He tried to burn down his teacher's house in the fourth grade and was sent in juvenile detention. He joined the fictitious white supremacist organization Alliance for Purity during this period.

T-Bag had an affair with a waitress in 1991, which led to David Martin. Prior to being imprisoned, Bagwell avoided the law and sought a romantic relationship with Susan Hollander, a single mother with two children from a previous marriage. He portrayed himself as a kind and kind man to Susan and her kids, and the Hollander family as a whole loved him. She called the police after learning that he was sought for murder and rape on America's Most sought. At Donaldson Prison in Alabama, Bagwell was found guilty on six charges of kidnapping, rape, and murder. He was given a life sentence.

T-Bag rose to prominence within Donaldson as the leader of the Alliance for Purity. The gang inside the prison grew so strong under his direction that the warden disbanded it and sent T-Bag to Fox River. He formed a new gang chapter in Fox River after realizing there were no members of the Alliance for Purity, and as it grew, it gave him considerable power inside the jail. He frequently preys on younger males in order to get sexual satisfaction from other prisoners.
