The village he grew up in was small. They lived off of the land, separate from the humans. They made their own farms, picked berries in the forest and gathered water from the rivers. Their houses were made from the wood of the trees, small and humble.

His mom was a quiet woman with small brown wings and feathers that came up from behind her ears and wrapped around the top of her head. Her hair was a light blonde, almost white and her skin, like most people in the area, was pale.

Her face was full and round and her nose was small and turned up at the end. Her eyes were a pale blue.

His father was stern and protective. His feet were huge talons and his wings were large and white with black speckles. His hair was gray and his eyes were dark purple. His face was skinny, almost hollow with hunger though his shoulders were broad. His nose was large with a hump in the middle and wherever he walked the sharp nails of his talons would scrape on the ground below him.

Ivan, the boy, was tall like his father but he had his mother's hair color. His wings were large and light beige and his nose had a hump to it as well. His face was round and his eyes were a pale purple, his feet were that of talons.

The area was mostly cold and so most people wore long sleeves with layers and dark clothing for extra warmth. Ivan's community used animal skin that they got from the animals they would hunt in the woods.

They were a community of Avians and most of their village was of the Owl type. They lived in Russia, under the oppression of the humans, like all Avians did.

Avians: Creatures that had both human and bird-like features. There are different kinds of Avians. (E.g. Owl types, Crow type, Jay type.) Some types have talons, wings on their backs or for arms, feathers around the ears or ankles and, on rare occasions, tail feathers or a tail that resembles the end of a snake with feathers at the tip.

The humans would sometimes come into the village for inspections. They claimed that it was important to keep the Avians under check as they were smart enough to do devastating things but lacked the understanding and sympathy needed to follow moral rules on their own. They had to be taught morals and follow stricter rules than the humans.

The human's cars were loud and scary, their guns were large and dangerous and the nets they brought reminded the Avians that they could be taken any second but Ivan and his family had nothing to hide, they followed the rules and they respected the human's when they would come through.

It all changed one day though. Iven was 12 and out on the dirt road playing with bugs and caterpillars that tried to cross the path when there was a rumble in the ground. Ivan stood up and looked ahead, down the road and could see in the distance dust coming up from the ground as it shook. There in the dust, was the vehicles of the humans, but not just any humans; the army was there.

Adult Avians gasped at the sight and began to scatter, some running to their homes and a few going to hide in the woods, but some stayed where they stood, staring at the men in the uniforms and getting ready to confront them and ask what was wrong. A hand was placed on Ivan's shoulder and he looked up to see his mother who did not look down at him. She stood there behind Ivan as the vehicles approached, among some of the vehicles were buses that she eyed worriedly.

Soon the vehicles came to a stop right in front of Ivan and his mother. A man stepped out with a speaker phone and walked around the vehicle toward the back, motioning for the men to go grab the Avians that had went to hide in the forest triggering those Avians, the ones that could fly, to take to the sky and causing the ment to shoot up at them with nets and ropes. The man stepped up on top of the vehicle and brought the speaker phone to his mouth, making his voice loud and clear to everyone in the area.

"Zakony i polozheniya o cheloveke-ptitse byli obnovleny v svyazi s nedavnimi sobytiyami v Yevrope, prolivayushchimi svet na novyye problemy." The man said. "Dlya bezopasnosti i blagopoluchiya vsekh, a takzhe dlya togo, chtoby my mogli sosushchestvovat', lyudi-ptitsy teper' budut proydeny dlya nadlezhashchego obucheniya i integrirovany v chelovecheskoye obshchestvo." People began to shout and Ivan's father ran out to his wife and son but his mother held up her hand and kept Ivan firm where he stood. "Vo vremya obucheniya vas otsenyat, chtoby uvidet' vashi sil'nyye i slabyye storony, chtoby ubedit'sya, chto rabota, kotoruyu vy poluchite, podoydet vam luchshe vsego. Vas takzhe prikrepyat k lyudyam, chtoby za vami sledili, chtoby ubedit'sya, chto vy soblyudayete pravila i zakony i vnosite vklad v zhizn' obshchestva. Eto to, chto luchshe dlya vsekh."

Some of the Aviens that had previously been standing in place or hidden in their homes began to run or fly towards the woods causing the soldiers to trap them more. Ivan's father reached his wife despite her protest and put his arm around her and a hand on Ivan's shoulder to pull him back. "Begat'." He tried to tell them discreetly but Ivan's mother shoved him back.

"Net." She stated sternly, "My mirno uydem, i lyudi uvidyat, chto my dobry, i my budem v bezopasnosti." She looked down to address Ivan and pushed him back a little so that she could crouch down to his level. "Vam budet khorosho i bezopasno." Her hands were firmly on his shoulders to hold him in place before she moved one to make sure his coat was properly wrapped around his skinny frame. "Vy budete zhit' v teplom meste, s bol'shim kolichestvom yedy i rabotat', chtoby zarabotat' sebe na zhizn', kak i vse ostal'nyye."

The man on top of the vehicle began to speak some more. "Vse vkhodyat v dve sherengi." He commanded. "Vzroslyye poydut v avtobus sprava ot dorogi s sinim markerom, a deti - v levyy avtobus s zelenym markerom."

"Pochemu nas razluchayut!?" An Avian man shouted out as he pulled his child close.

The human gave him a stern look. "Vzroslym trebuyetsya drugoye obucheniye, chem detyam."

Ivan puckered his bottom lip like he was about to cry but his mother smoothed it out with her thumb and hushed him harshly. "Ne plach'. My ne ishchem takogo sochuvstviya, my sil'nyye, khrabryye i dobryye, i lyudi uvidyat eto i nashu tsennost'. Togda nam budet pozvoleno nayti drug druga. My yeshche vstretimsya."

That was the last he heard of his mother as she stood to her full height, ready to hand him over to the soldiers but Ivan's dad moved to step in front of him. "Net!" He shouted. "Vy ne zaberete moyego syna i zhenu, dazhe yesli oni zakhotyat uyti! YA znayu, chto eto takoye! Ty pogubish' ikh, kak lyudi vsegda postupayut s predstavitelyami nashego vida!" He moved like he was ready to fight but several soldiers moved to grab him, tying him with rope and beating him with the backs of their guns.

Ivan was taken by another soldier as chaos erupted throughout the town and though Ivan went peacefully he did look back at his father who fought and when his father made eye contact with him his father shouted out. "Drat'sya! Ivan! Ne ostanavlivaysya! Vsegda borites'!" That was the last Ivan heard of his father.
