The new kid

"What is life?" That was the question my philosophy teacher assigned us as homework at the beginning of the year. He gave us the whole year to write 20 pages about what is life? At the beginning I thought it would have been easy, a one week assignment but when I delivered my work, my very very very lovely teacher said that I needed to really think it through. It's been three months and snow is starting to feel of course I'm not going home this year for Christmass, why would I? My parents are trying to convince me to not come back for college next year and that our little tropical country has equally good opportunities and I would be with my family, which I think is bullshit. It took me a year to feel like home here and make real friends and four years later they want me to leave? no fucking way Im staying takes what it take.

"Hey are you there?" The barista in front of me brings me back to reality. "yes, sorry, can I get a caramel frappe, a tea, and black coffee" yep that was my order, I wouldn't say I'm addicted to caffeine, but others have. I pay and then I find my friend waiting for me at a corner table, he is literally my best friend. I could even say my big brother, Luke Shelby. Of course he always bullies me because he is American and I am on a student visa. "Hey, I saw this fence the other day and I was wondering if you knew how to get over it" he showed me a picture of the white house front fence. Yeah every time he had a fence or dividing wall in front he took a picture and showed it to me. I rolled my eyes and flipped him off "no, the one I crossed was bigger" I said sarcastically sitting down "are Naomi and Joel coming? I'm still stuck on that assignment" I was exhausted, after three beautiful months (please notice my sarcasm) and 10 drafts rejected I had only one approved paragraph, what even meant that question? In science it would be the period a being is alive, for society it would be to have a comfortable economy to live well enough. For me it was to survive my last year of high school without jumping out of my dorm room. "Jo said he was feeling sick and Naomi was on her way, she was finishing her class" I laugh at Joel's excuse not to come, he was always avoiding going out and if we convinced him he would cancel at the last minute. I was about to get out my computer to try and write my assignment when the loudest people on this earth entered, Spaniards.

Of course the Spanish people were the loudest on campus. I knew them all and hated most of them. Maybe for the most part I was being unfair because I was the only Spanish speaker they didn't accept in their group. I am not sure why they don't like me but they don't and that's enough for me to be honest I asked myself if I wasn't latin enough for them very often. I'm not proud of letting them get to my head and bother me this much. Every time I started feeling good about myself, one of them talked shit about me, and all the progress went to hell. I am not saying that all of them are bad because at least five of them were really sweet and friendly, and probably the only ones that talked to me from time to time. They were probably the only reason why I would consider going back to live with my parents, but just thinking of my family was enough to take that idea off my head.

"Mary" the barista called my name, I should really stop zoning out. Shit I have to walk past the hispanics to get my caffeine. Girls just breathe and don't make eye contact, don't even look in their direction. Walk, walk, walk, walk, okay now smile and grab your order "thanks" great now walk back. I sat back with my three cups "woah, that's a lot of coffee bozo, you sure can take it" Naomi said sitting next to me. Her pink fluffy jacket is on and her computer was already out and Luke had his math on the table already ofc he laughed at my caffein, how dare he, if he drinks half a coffee he will stay up for the rest of the week. "oh shut up!" I took out my computer and glanced at the hispanic group near us "do you know why they are here? they never come here" I asked Naomi was pretty popular and knew a lot about everyone, great for my little chismesito sessions, if you got chisme, pan dulce and coffee you got me as well, clearly I had to be discreet about it. "Mary! stop being nosey" Luke said laughing while scribbling on his math homework, he is always doing anything but actual homework "do your homework Luke, I heard there is a new greek guy and they adopted him, you know how it is, he will be speaking more Spanish than English in two months'' she was right every time there was a new kid who was latin or that type of european they were adopted by the hispanic group and if you wanted to learn english you better get away from them.
