Lily realized it had been a bad idea to accompany Emma for a blood donation drive first thing on Monday morning. But the urgent requirement for B-positive blood had sent Emma, her elder sister, into a frenzy, resulting in Lily donating along with her.
Lily finished up and refused the nurses advice to rest before running the block to 'The Rampage' New York office. The only reason she had accepted her sister's demands was because of the close proximity of the two locations. She had donated blood often, so she was aware of the care requirements afterwards.
After completing her formalities with the receptionist, she was led by one of the staff members towards an auditorium, which was almost filled with what she could make out to be 15 people. Her nerves were tingling with excitement at being one of the few people who had been finalized for one of the most coveted positions. The internships were difficult, but they would help anyone who got them later in their career. She, along with the rest of the people, had passed four rounds of selection to reach here.
She looked around and realized that her choice of attire had been appropriate. Although they were interning at a fashion magazine, the first day should be professional. She'd looked at the staff in the lobby and loved everyone's outfits. Heels, brands everywhere, and the latest clothes from the biggest fashion houses were worn as if they cost nothing.
After a short while, Lily saw a small woman walk out and begin to talk about the magazine as well as the head media company that they were under. Lily felt light-headed after the lecture went on for what seemed like an hour. She'd looked through her bag but realized she'd forgotten her snack in the hospital itself. Cursing herself, she forced herself to focus and listen to the woman who was now talking about the various departments they'd be placed in. But by now, Lily's control over her body had left.
As the voice got quieter, her head rolled forward, causing everything to go black.
——-
"Excuse me! Miss?!" Someone said. Lily heard the voice echo in her head as the sound of fingers snapping echoed in her ears.
Opening her eyes and blinking widely, Lily looked up at a young man holding an iPad, looking down at her disapprovingly. She looked around and saw everyone staring at her. Had she fallen asleep? Or fainted? She tried to recall, but her mind went blank.
"Miss Page? I'm afraid we have to ask you to leave." The man curtly told her and pointed at the exit door.
What???? She thought to herself. She tried to say something, but the man just clicked his tongue and motioned again. Gathering her bag, she stood up and looked over to the front of the room. There, standing next to the small woman, looking like a giant, stood a man in a suit, sneering in her direction. As she looked, he turned away, as if the scene unfolding was unpleasant and disgusting.
Lily felt her eyes burn with embarrassment and walked out of the door. She stood in the hallway, feeling numb at whatever had just transpired, as the man who had told her to leave informed her that her internship offer had been withdrawn.
She walked out and found a washroom. Walking into a stall, she sat down.
She'd fainted, and they'd kicked her out.
Lily sat with her head in her hands, going over all the scenarios. Should she go back and apologize? Should she try to explain what had happened?
She was crying at this point when a loud commotion made her raise her head.
"Ah fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Are these people idiots or what?" She heard a woman cursing.
Wiping her face, Lily walked out. She saw a tall, petite woman, dressed in a suit, wiping away at her blazer.
