The first day of school was a mix of excitement and worry. Maya and Mark walked side by side through the entrance of Swellview High, with Mark chatting happily.
"Just remember, be nice to people," Mark said with a big smile. "And try not to cause too much trouble, okay?"
Maya rolled her eyes but nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I got it."
Mark kept talking, "High school is going to be amazing! There's so much to do and so many people I want you to meet. Clubs, sports, events... I have so much stuff to show you!"
Maya wasn't as excited. She was still sad about her summer break ending. The thought of starting high school made her stomach churn.
"Why did summer have to end so soon? I had so much fun with my friends. Now, I'm supposed to just start over? Make new friends?" she thought.
Mark's voice broke through her thoughts. "And the teachers are really cool, too. Mr. Thompson in biology does these awesome experiments. And Mrs. Davis in history makes every lesson feel like a story. You're going to love it!"
Maya forced a smile. "Sounds great," she said, but she didn't really mean it.
Mark looked at her, his expression softening. He reached out and gently squeezed her shoulder. "Hey, I know you're not thrilled about this. But give it a chance, okay? You might end up liking it more than you think."
She looked at him and saw he was sincere. "Yeah, maybe," she muttered.
As they approached the entrance of Swellview High, the big building loomed before them. Maya took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. Mark nudged her playfully.
"Ready to take on the world?" he asked.
She sighed, giving him a sideways glance. "As ready as I'll ever be, I guess."
"Good. Because you're going to crush it," Mark said confidently.
With that, they stepped through the doors, the bustling noise of students and teachers surrounding them. Maya's heart raced with a mix of excitement and dread. She glanced at Mark, who gave her a reassuring smile.
"Maybe high school won't be so bad," she thought, trying to convince herself. "Maybe, just maybe, it'll be okay."
As they walked through the crowded hallways, Maya's uncertainty was interrupted by her best friend Kenzie and Jacob. Kenzie and Maya had been inseparable since birth, while Jacob and Mark shared a bond just as strong.
"Hey, guys!" Kenzie greeted cheerfully as she and Jacob caught up to them.
Mark and Jacob immediately launched into their secret handshake, a flurry of intricate moves that ended with them laughing and clapping each other on the back.
Jacob turned to Maya, his expression serious. "Maya, try not to cause too much trouble today, okay? It's important we start off on the right foot."
Maya rolled her eyes dramatically. "Everyone's on my case today."
Kenzie chuckled. "Jacob, calm down and let the universe solve itself."
Maya nodded in agreement, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "Yeah, Jacob, you're always stressing like it's your full-time job. Ever think about taking a vacation from worrying?"
Everyone burst into laughter, including Jacob, who shook his head with a small smile. "Alright, alright, I get it. Just... be careful."
Mark nudged Jacob playfully. "Come on, let's go check out the gym. I heard they renovated it over the summer."
