"My mate."

I whispered in a hiss, her frail body falling into my chest, legs giving out from beneath her. I didn't let her meet that filthy ground, keeping her up firmly by the waist, my fiery eyes zoning in on the piece of scum that dared hurt my mate—my precious girl

To trick her into believing that she had found her destined partner, to have that sweet smile wiped off her face in seconds, to try and target one of my people—it was fucking sickening. These filthy hybrid trafficking groups dared try and kidnap my soulmate?

They had another thing coming.

"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" My voice boomed down the silent alleyway, a deep guttural growl slicing through the thickened air. The scrawny bug stepped back, clearly not having expected me to show up—of course I would've followed my damn soulmate. I knew something was up when she received that call, my instincts roaring at me to follow her, to make sure she was safe.

"W-Who—Who are you?!" He yelled scratchily, wavering pupils glancing behind me every so often. Oh so he was expecting backup? I'd have to make this quick. Wasting no time, I carefully picked her up bridal style and then slung her over my shoulder, giving me access to one free hand. "I-I said who are you?!" He repeated even louder, voice trembling as he stepped back once I took a threatening step forward.

"You didn't answer my fucking question. What did you think you were doing with my mate?" I spat, venom dripping off my words. My strides were long as I finally closed the distance, looming over this feeble thing.

"M-Mate?! Fuck—they didn't tell me she had another!" He hissed quietly, scrambling back and against a dumpster, trapping his cowering body indefinitely. Fingers fidgeted around with a syringe, and before he could even attempt to use it, I wrapped a large hand around the wrist holding it, glowering at him as the needle dropped to the slimy cement.

"I ask one simple question and you can't even fucking answer me. You're so so lucky she's here right now or you would be seeing your ancestors in hell." I snarled, hastily grabbing ahold of his shirt and slamming him back into the metal bin, the sound echoing down the walls. It was just enough to make him pass out, heaving a frustrated sigh as I threw him over my other shoulder with ease, swiftly picking up the syringe that was now covered in a clear goop.

"I swear if she doesn't wake up I'll fucking kill this bastard." I grunted, standing to my full height and rushing out the darkness and into the darker orange hues, giving no shits about the many strange and horrified looks I received from passerby's, just focused on getting to that cafe.

I was careful not to move too roughly with her on my shoulder, wanting to give her less pain than she's already received. I just couldn't believe I met my soulmate under these conditions, conditions that I knew happened all too well. It pissed me off so much, knowing they'd try and target someone using her markings against her; I wanted to pummel this guy into the ground just thinking about it.

Hearing how excited she was, seeing the obvious pep in her step when she rushed out the cafe—only to see it shifted into a look of anger and distraught; it broke my heart. I didn't even want to imagine how her other soulmates might react, and I didn't even want to start with telling my partner in crime.

The cafe bell dinged upon me stepping inside, ignoring the boggled looks as I made my way over to a certain table hosting a blonde hybrid. I knew I needed to go to the hospital, to the station even, but I couldn't do that without telling her friend.
